Located in sunny West Palm Beach, Florida, Recovery Associates of the Palm Beaches offers a 12-step based, 30-day program with multiple disciplines of treatment. Eschewing a “one-size-fits-all” recovery philosophy, the program instead offers traditional, expressive and Christian-oriented tracks for clients to choose from, all incorporating one-on-one counseling and small group therapy. Much of the work done at Recovery Associates is also designed to prepare residents for the transition into outpatient and sober living facilities as well.
Accommodations and Food
The average length of stay at Recovery Associates is 28 to 30 days, and clients are housed in separate apartments in the main Recovery Associates facility. The building itself is decorated with bright colors and modern accoutrements, attempting to provide a light and open atmosphere.
Each resident lives in a shared unit with several other clients. Recovery Associates keeps enrollment low (with a capacity of 24) with usually no more than 12 residents on-site at a time. Because of this, many clients enjoy their own rooms, all with twin beds and basic furnishings. Each unit has two bathrooms which residents share with those they’re paired with.
Men and women are housed in different units but still attend group sessions together. Clients are expected to cook their own meals, trading off these duties in turns with their roommates. Recovery Associates makes weekly trips to a local grocery store and gives residents a $75-a-week stipend for food. Often, roommates pool their stipend cards to purchase group meals together. The whole effort is meant to inspire living skills, which are carried into Recovery Associate’s IOP and sober living programs.
Treatment and Staff
Recovery Associates is 12-step based though they offer three distinct tracks for treatment. The first is deemed “traditional” and follows basic 12-step ideology. The second is “expressive” and includes psychodrama, movement, art therapy, sound, writing, Sand Play Therapy and guided imagery. Finally, there is the “Christian” track (also known as the Bridge to Faith program), a faith-based approach to drug and alcohol treatment with a religious foundation.
No matter what track residents choose, each day follows a similar routine of group therapy and meetings. Days typically begin at 7:30 am with breakfast and a group meeting directly following. After lunch there are more group meetings until 3:30 pm, when recreation begins, during which time clients go on group trips or just relax. After dinner, residents attend a mixture of on and off-site meetings.
Recovery Associates does not offer an on-site medical detox, though it does assist in finding a local facility for those who need one. There is a psychiatrist on-staff who can handle residents’ medications as needed, as well as two medical assistants who monitor client needs in-house. Recovery Associates is also located close to a local hospital in case of emergencies.
Extras
Recovery Associates does offer recreational activities and makes attempts to grant their residents off-site trips. These include trips to the nearby beach, bowling alley and movie theater in downtown West Palm Beach. While there is no gym on-site, clients have access to a local gym with daily transportation provided during free time.
As they’re only a 30-day program, much of the recovery work at Recovery Associates is designed to prepare residents for further phases of treatment, which include an extensive outpatient program consisting of three sessions a week at the main facility and a Sober Living program in the West Palm Beach area.
