Rappahannock Rapidan Community ServicesRappahannock Rapidan Community Services Review

Covering five counties in northern Virginia, Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services offers detoxresidential and outpatient treatment for substance abuse at various locations. This community network serves people of any age who live in the area, meet criteria for a substance use disorder or who have anger management issues related to substance use. Dual diagnosis support is available in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The goal is to provide a friendly, effective and efficient way to connect clients with the appropriate level of help according to their preferences, clinical needs and financial considerations.

Accommodations and Food

Boxwood Recovery Center is the residential treatment facility in the Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services network. Adult clients who need medically-supervised detox, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and inpatient services are referred here. During the detox program, each client has a private room. They are then moved into the inpatient recovery wing, which is a typical institutional setting, with hospital-style rooms that are each shared between two clients.

Meals are prepared by a dietician and they can cater to vegetarians and those with food allergies or health or religious restrictions. Outdoor grounds include recreational activities such as a basketball court and walking track.

Treatment and Staff

In the Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services network, when anyone calls one of the clinics to request services, they are immediately connected by phone or in person to a clinician. The clinician conducts an assessment, collects necessary information and determines whether the person requires detox, residential, intensive outpatient or routine outpatient services. Clients are then referred to the appropriate level of care.

Boxwood Recovery Center provides a 28-day residential substance abuse treatment program for males and females, 18 and above, who live in one of the five counties in the network plus Prince William and Loudoun counties. Anyone requesting admission must be pre-screened in their area of residence, then referred for admission. The program accepts clients with co-occurring disorders and provides separate co-occurring groups. While most clients stay 28 days, the referring clinician may request a stay anywhere from two weeks to 60 days. Treatment at Boxwood involves individual, family, and group counseling, educational films, lectures and relapse prevention. Treatment models include Matrix, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT techniques. AA/NA groups are held on a daily basis.

If a treatment plan recommends outpatient treatment, clients are referred to their local clinic or hospital in the network. Services may vary slightly, depending on location, but follow the same general guidelines.

Intensive outpatient Programming (IOP) is divided into two phases. The first phase is for 30 sessions and meets three days a week for three hours a day. Phase two meets once a week for 10 sessions and focuses on relapse prevention. Both phases primarily provide treatment in a group therapy setting. Regular outpatient treatment typically meets for 15 sessions once a week for three hours. Individual therapy is for clients who are unable to work in a group. There is a specialized Women’s Alternatives program available.

The staff of all facilities includes LADCs, mental health technicians, physicians, psychiatrists and psychologists.

Extras

Auricular (ear) acupuncture is offered with the outpatient treatment program to assist in alleviating cravings associated with addiction. An outpatient case worker is available to provide case management in assessing a client’s needs for housing, vocation and healthcare and matching them with community resources.

The family program and visitation is on Sundays

In Summary

Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services offers residential treatment for adults over the age of 18 and outpatient treatment for all ages in northern Virginia. The many modalities used in the individualized programs include alternative treatments.
