the-ranchThe Ranch Review

Located in Desert Hot Springs, California, The Ranch offers 12-step gender-specific treatment in a desert setting. With views of mountains and the Coachella Valley, clients can get away from city distractions and focus on recovery. While many Southern California treatment facilities tend to be costly, this residential treatment program is very affordable, allowing the most individuals the opportunity to receive treatment at a low cost.

Accommodations and Food

Just minutes from Palm Springs, The Ranch has two separate residences for men and women. Both are converted hotels, accommodating 35 people at a time. The spacious but basic bedrooms are shared between three clients and feature twin-sized trundle beds, closet space, carpeting, bedside tables and reading lamps. For groups, clients have access to a large living room, filled with many comfortable couches, overhead fans and a fireplace for colder nights. The homes also have working kitchens, dining rooms, a communal TV and an open room for 12-step meetings.

While the desert days can get up into the 100s during the summer, clients can cool off in the house pool. It may not be Olympic-sized or resemble the pool at the Four Seasons but it is perfect for a hot day. The Ranch also features on-site stationary machines for workouts during free time.

Mealtime is a group effort at this facility. Although the kitchens are fully stocked and overseen by a cook, clients take turns helping with cooking. Chores are an important part of the recovery program, allowing clients to learn responsibility in a communal environment.

Treatment

The Ranch offers separate tracks for men and women, allowing clients to focus on gender-specific issues. Treatment time is a minimum of 45 days, although some clients stay for an additional 15 days. While a social detox can be done during this time, no medical attention is available.

Treatment involves a minimum of six individual sessions, group therapy, educational lectures, 12-step meetings and a family program. Group topics include life skills, trauma, grief, anger management, processing and relapse prevention. Residents can attend several AA/NA meetings throughout the week, in addition to group lectures that explain the program in depth.

When clients complete their residential living, they have the option of continuing on with sober living. This step-down option allows clients to work during the day and return home at night to a structured, substance-free environment. The sober living home also provides individual counseling, 12-step meetings, life skills groups and group therapy.

While nurses and a psychiatrist are missing from the staff, The Ranch does have a group of CADCs.

Extras

The aforementioned pool is certainly an extra. There’s also a family program where loved ones are invited in for group work, education on addiction and individual counseling when needed.

In Summary

Clients of The Ranch have the opportunity to heal amid the natural beauty of the Mojave Desert. Through surrender to the 12 steps and an honest approach to recovery, sobriety can be obtained here for a great price.
