providence alaska breakthroughThe Basics

Residents of Alaska have access to quality outpatient services for behavioral health at Providence Alaska’s Breakthrough program. The behavioral services at Breakthrough are offered to adults over the age of 18 through programs that take a medical approach to addiction while also applying 12-step principles. Treatment options include Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). Clients are offered an aftercare option for relapse prevention after completing an initial course of treatment.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Breakthrough begins with a clinical assessment that determines the proper level of care. For those in need of intensive care not available at Breakthrough, outside referrals can be made.

Breakthrough’s PHP includes group and individual therapy sessions along with involvement in a 12-step program. Clients are required to attend from noon to 5:30 pm Monday through Thursday and from 9 am to 5 pm on Friday. All participants are offered one hot or cold meal a day. Cold meals consist of sandwiches and salads while hot meals offer a variety of pastas, Mexican, and Asian cuisine. Every Friday, clients get to order pizza. Treatment typically lasts 30 days, after which many clients choose to continue on to the IOP program as a step-down option.

IOP is for those who do not need full-time structure. This program meets on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, catering to clients who work and are seeking to attend treatment while still engaging in their daily lives. Treatment consists primarily of group sessions, with individual therapy with a counselor scheduled as necessary. The program is six months long and gradually decreases in intensity as clients progress.

Group sessions in both programs cover topics such as healthy relationships, stress management, relaxation techniques, dual diagnosis support, early recovery and substance abuse awareness, using the addiction-as-a-disease model. Groups are coed and consist of about 15 to 20 people. Counselors use evidence-based therapy techniques like CBT and DBT during group and individual sessions. Breakthrough strongly encourages individuals to participate in a 12-step program. There are no AA/NA meetings held on-site, but referrals to local community meetings are provided at the end of group sessions and upon request.

Staff members consist of five LADCs and two medical doctors who specialize in addiction. Both doctors can provide referrals for off-site psychiatric medication management.

Extras

A family group takes place every Wednesday night. During this time, clients’ family members attend educational lectures on the effects of substance abuse.

An aftercare program is offered to those who have completed treatment and are able to provide sober support to their peers. It consists of lecture-based courses held once a week for three hours, with lectures focusing on relapse prevention and coping with stress. Alumni are invited to participate at no extra charge for a duration of 10 weeks.

In Summary

At Providence Breakthrough, adults in Alaska are offered intimate group gatherings for assistance during recovery. Individual sessions and family groups are also available on a weekly basis. Treatment at Breakthrough offers assistance to individuals seeking different levels of treatment in an outpatient setting.
