Primary Purpose CAThe Basics

Located in North Los Angeles, Primary Purpose has three gender-specific sober living homes offering a safe space for recovering addicts to continue their recovery. Men have their choice of residing in either North Hollywood or Van Nuys while women have a home nearby in Valley Glen. Each offers a comfortable environment with many surrounding resources to support each resident’s recovery.

Accommodations and Amenities

All the houses have their own modest charm and amenities, and each has a residential manager who lives on-site and night managers to ensure the safety and comfort of residents at all times. Each home has cable TV, Wi-Fi and central air for hot desert days. Free local and long-distance calling is available through the house’s landline. The three homes in the Los Angeles area are close to metropolitan areas with access to bus and train lines, shopping, restaurants, meetings and the art districts.

All of the homes have shared bedrooms with two to three residents to a room and typically six to eight clients total at any given time—some also have walk-in closets. All beds are twin-sized. Bathrooms are shared between residents and offer ample storage space and updated fixtures. Common areas include spacious and comfortable living rooms, large outdoor areas and a porch to relax on.

Rules and Regulations

All of PP’s homes have a strict no-tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol. For the safety of each client and the other residents, random drug and breathalyzer screenings are regularly conducted. In addition to staying clean and sober during their stay, all clients must actively participate in 12-step meetings and work rigorous programs with a sponsor. Attending a minimum of four AA/NA meetings per week is required. Clients are also encouraged to integrate a spiritual practice into their recovery.

On Thursday through Sunday clients have a curfew of 11 pm; this extends to 1 am on Friday and Saturday. After residents have stayed for 30 days they are permitted two overnight passes a week. Staff ensures that all clients are productive and regularly contributing to household chores. Eventually, all residents are expected to have their own income and provide their own food.

Within the first few weeks of their residence, clients must either be employed, attending school, volunteering or actively participating in an outpatient program. There are no minimum or maximum stays enforced—clients stay anywhere from three months to two years.

Extras

All clients in PP homes participate in communal activities to build camaraderie and relationships, such as sober volleyball and baseball leagues. The facility’s proximity to LA-area art districts means residents can take advantage of local restaurants, theaters, galleries and a vast network of 12-step fellowships.

In Summary

Primary Purpose is dedicated to offering affordable and comfortable sober environments for men and women. With special activities available outside of the home as well, clients can create positive memories and live a complete life while transitioning out of treatment. Men and women are able to start their lives anew by attending 12-step meetings, fulfilling their responsibilities and tending to their own well-being, all at an affordable price.
