Practical Recovery - Reunion San DiegoPractical Recovery – Reunion San Diego Review

Located in San Diego, California, Practical Recovery – Reunion San Diego. was founded by SMART Recovery president and enthusiast Dr. Tom Horvath in 1985. The rehab offers SMART Recovery as an alternative to the spiritual 12-step approach.

Practical Recovery offers three outpatient programs, individual outpatient therapy in which clients drop in to see their specialists on-site, intensive individual outpatient (IIOP), and intensive outpatient (IOP) as well as two residential treatment programs including the high-end Practical Recovery – Reunion San Diego and the women-only Restoration Inn.

Accommodations And Food

In addition to on-site treatment at Practical Recovery, clients may choose to stay in one of two sober living facilities.

Carmel Summit Retreat and Nueva Sober Living are the facility’s two Sober Living homes, both of which feature recovery planning facilitated by a CAADAC-certified case manager. Considered the more luxurious option, Carmel Summit is a seven-bed residence located 15 minutes from Practical Recovery. Clients attend groups on the 4,700 square foot property and may hike and surf nearby. High-end entrees prepared by a private chef are included, as well as transportation to Practical Recovery.

Nueva Sober Living is a less expensive alternative. Located in nearby Mira Mesa, Nueva Sober Living is a seven-bed home with a full kitchen, yard, laundry and fireplace. There are no group meetings on site as well as no staff-cooked meals. Centrally located to Practical Recovery and SMART meetings, Nueva Sober Living does not provide transportation services.

Treatment and Staff

For those who require detox, services are available at one of the inpatient facilities.

After an initial assessment, clients receive individualized treatment plans. The IOP offers three weekly group therapy sessions while the IIOP-Practical Recovery’s PHP-provides three to five individual therapy sessions per week with rotating therapists.

Practical Recovery utilizes a plethora of evidence-based approaches including CBT, Motivational Interviewing, Rational Emotive Therapy, DBT, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), psychodynamic therapy, EMDR and EFT. ACT is designed to teach clients how to accept unpleasant feelings and not act on them in a negative way.

Topics addressed in therapy include relapse prevention, co-occurring disorders, mindfulness, contingency management, relationship issues and life-transition difficulties.

For all clients, weekly treatment also includes optional attendance at recovery meetings. While 12-step meetings are not prohibited, most clients gravitate to SMART recovery and Women in Sobriety meetings because those echo the rehab’s treatment protocol.

Individual outpatient programs provide clients with one to two individual therapy sessions per week.

Board-certified clinical psychologist Dr. Tom Horvath supervises the 23-person outpatient team. Clinical staff includes two licensed senior psychologists, a licensed clinical psychologist/IOP director, clinical coordinator/psychologist, IOP coordinator, relapse prevention counselor, a hypnotherapist and six administrative staff employees. Practical Recovery has nine consulting staff members including three licensed psychologists, a meditation specialist, energy healer, body worker, a massage therapist and two psychiatrists.

Extras

In addition the aforementioned energy work and massage options available, Practical Recovery offers acupuncture, hypnotherapy, yoga, sand play therapy, guided imagery, bodywork and dream work both as part of the treatment program and a la carte.

IOP provides free aftercare and multi-family support groups. Each group meets twice a week for a year.

In Summary

Practical Recovery is a practical place for those who seek alternative treatments to the 12-step approach. Choices in sober living accommodations and the large array of therapies and activities further contribute to the individualized approach.
