Overlooking the Hudson River, Phelps Memorial Hospital is a nonprofit institution that offers both residential and outpatient drug rehabilitation services for residents of Westchester County, New York, and surrounding communities. Certified by New York State, their programs treat adults and adolescents with chemical dependency issues, as well as offering support for family and friends who have been affected by addiction.

Accommodations and Food

The residential treatment services take place on one floor of the sprawling, modern Phelps Memorial Hospital building. This no-frills program is designed to feed and house 42 adult men and women, ages 19 and over. Clients are assigned two to a room—they share a bathroom and private rooms are not available. Use of electronic devices that connect to the Internet is restricted, but a pay phone is available and clients may also receive calls at this number. Visitors are only allowed on Saturdays. Smoking is strictly prohibited; smokers are given nicotine patches or gum to ease cravings. There are both exercise and recreation rooms for clients to work out, watch movies, play games and read books.

Meals are provided through the hospital cafeteria and special dietary needs are usually accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

Phelps Memorial Hospital offers a highly structured inpatient treatment experience. Clients admitted to the program stay for 21 days, with a discharge summary and aftercare treatment plan prepared upon completion by their assigned psychiatrist and social worker. Those requiring medical detox are referred to another unit of the hospital before they begin treatment. Residents don’t have much down time, since there are seven to 10 group therapy sessions available each day. They are required to attend groups as prescribed in their individualized treatment plans, as well as daily appointments with a psychiatrist. Dual-diagnosis support is offered.

Groups are not 12-step oriented and focus on educating participants about drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Led by a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner, gambling and nicotine addiction issues are also addressed in the course of treatment

The outpatient program operates out of the same facility, with a similar multi-disciplinary team of staff as the inpatient program. Clients who are stepping down from the inpatient program work closely with the same psychiatrists and social workers,  ensuring they receive a strong continuum of care throughout their recovery.Treatment includes a combination of group and individual therapy, family counseling and drug and alcohol education. Groups focus on early-, middle- and late-stage recovery, relapse prevention and co-dependency. Continued psychiatric evaluation, medication management and clinical services are also available.

The staff consists of licensed psychiatric nurses, social workers, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists and doctors.

Extras

Support is offered to the families of clients through group and individual counseling sessions. There is vocational education and support to assist clients moving into new jobs, and additional support for those who are court-ordered to complete a DUI program or who are Spanish speakers.

In Summary

Phelps Memorial Hospital offers comprehensive care to those struggling with chemical dependency in the Westchester County area. The inpatient residential program provides a highly-structured environment in which clients can focus exclusively on recovery. The outpatient program ensures clients continue to establish healthy behavioral patterns, while gaining independence. Though insurance coverage is preferred, uninsured clients can negotiate payment plans through financial aid services.
