Palmetto Behavioral Health is committed to providing affordable detox, outpatient care and psychiatric services. Located in historic Charleston, this facility beside the peaceful Ashley River specializes in treating mental illness. Those who attend this program can receive care for issues such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and bipolar disorder. Both adults and adolescents are welcomed, with services such as acute inpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) offered in a highly, structured environment. While this facility does not offer traditional residential care, the outpatient options allow people to maintain their normal lives as they receive treatment.
Accommodations and Food
During the acute inpatient phase, clients stay in a detox facility with comfortable beds and large bathrooms. This program serves up to 16 people at a time, with a focus on stabilization. Clients share a basic room with one other client. Typically, a lot of the detox process is spent in bed, although clients have the option of attending group therapy down the hall once they have regained strength.
The outpatient program occupies a large, converted office space just a short drive away from the inpatient facility. The space is aesthetically pleasing, holding between 10 and 20 clients and featuring the basic necessities of a recovery center: chairs, couches, whiteboards and a television.
Only the inpatient and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) provide food, serving home-cooked meals, with a focus on health and nutrition. Outpatient clients are welcome to bring snacks from home.
Treatment
Acute inpatient care involves a five- to 10-day detox period with constant medical attention from doctors and nurses. Once medical stabilization is reached, the program includes psychiatric evaluation, clinical treatment groups and family support. Although it lasts only 10 days, the program also covers relapse prevention, life skills and the 12 steps.
The C.A.R.E intensive outpatient operates Monday through Thursday from 5:45 to 9:30 pm. It offers services for both adults and adolescents, including psycho-educational groups, individual therapy if requested or recommended, weekly multi-family groups and family/couples therapy. Group topics include life skills, processing, relapse prevention, introduction to the 12 steps, trauma and anger management. Groups are run by social workers, while medication management is overseen by a consulting psychiatrist.
For those needing something more intense, the partial hospitalization program runs Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 3 pm, while the intensive outpatient program runs Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 11:30 pm. These programs follow a similar structure to the C.A.R.E program, using group therapy, 12-step meetings, individual therapy and education to help clients recover successfully.
The outpatient programs typically run for six weeks, costing $135 per day.

All alumni receive up to one year of complimentary, weekly group therapy.
