Palm House Inc. Review

Founded in 2005, Palm House Inc. is a men’s long-term residential treatment program in Carson, California, a community not far from downtown Los Angeles. Palm House focuses on 12-step-based recovery for men with alcohol and substance abuse issues. Clients who have recently been incarcerated or homeless are welcome to stay as residents at the home. There is a waiting list to get into Palm House, though once a client moves into the house, he can stay for up to one year.

Accommodations and Food

Palm House is a residence that houses 10 men in one room and four men in another. There is a full kitchen and two bathrooms. There are typically 14 men in the house at any given time and all sleep on bunk beds. Clients are assigned to cook certain meals daily as a commitment to the group. There is a zero-tolerance policy of alcohol or substances of any kind on the property. Clients with disabilities or special accommodations will be referred to other treatment programs.

Treatment and Staff

Palm House’s residential treatment program lasts an average of six months. Depending on treatment goals—there are a few men with court-ordered requirements—clients may request extensions for nine months to a year to complete treatment. Palm House organizes its treatment goals in three phases for the men. The first phase is a 30-day lockdown with no phones and no contact with outside visitors except screened visitations from family members or close contacts. Clients attend 12-step meetings at the house to facilitate work on the first three steps of the program. Clients are required to get a sponsor over the course of 90 days as a crucial part of their Phase Two development.

Phase Three treatment goals, completed in the fourth month of residency, are geared towards helping clients search for sober living facilities and for jobs. Certified counselors on staff guide clients through two groups a day and individual counseling, including Motivational Interviewing (MI). After four months of treatment, clients are able to go back to jobs or to school while still living in the house. Panels take place during evening hours; primary counselors report to the house on Saturdays to work with clients. There are two counselors on staff and one property manager who is on-site evenings through the early morning every day of the week.

There are no psychiatrists on-site and no doctors to administer medications. When clients with dual diagnosis issues need further help in counseling, Palm House staff sends them out for referrals to nearby Harbor General Hospital. Otherwise, staff conducts screenings before residents are admitted to the house in case there are psychological issues that they are not equipped to address. Palm House outsources to other therapeutic communities for as-needed educational courses or therapy addressing such issues as parenting or anger management.

In Summary

Palm House is a community environment where clients focus on recovery without the anxiety of finding a new place to live after 30 days. Though dual diagnosis support is not available for treatment, Palm House is closely linked with Harbor General Hospital where clients receive psychiatric or medical help as needed. Palm House is a choice for those looking for an economical residential treatment center that supports clients by encouraging work on the 12 steps in a timely fashion.
