Oak House Review
Located in Citrus Heights, a suburb of Sacramento, California, Oak House aims to provide affordable treatment in a home-like setting for men and women ages 18 and up. Treatment time ranges from 30 days to one year and the 12-step based program opens clients up to a Higher Power, like-minded community and support as they progress through recovery.
Accommodations and Food
Those looking for a homey environment during treatment will find it at Oak House. The modest, 14-bed home makes clients feel comfortable and offers the basic necessities: shared bedrooms, a living room with a television, a modern kitchen, a dining room, plenty of bathrooms and outdoor seating.
Residents are required to participate in cooking meals as a way of adding to their life skills. In the kitchen, they work under the guidance and direction of an on-site cook. From prepping to cutting to mixing, they get their hands dirty as they learn their way around the kitchen. Meals are served family style and eaten as a group in the dining room.
While there isn’t a workout area in the house, clients are taken to the local gym twice a week where, with access to weights and stationary machines, they can release endorphins and relieve stress.
Treatment and Staff
Clients are under the care of licensed counselors and support staff during their stay. With a two-to-one client-to-staff ratio, residents are closely monitored. While a five-day detox is available on-site for an additional $1,200, it is not medically monitored. However, there is occasional access to an off-site medical doctor as well as detox meds.
Once the treatment plan begins, clients follow busy schedules that focus around group therapy. With four groups a day, clients address life skills, relapse prevention, addiction as a disease, processing, trauma and 12-step work. In addition to the group work, clients meet with their individual counselor twice a week. During these private sessions, clients can address issues around trauma and mental health in further detail.
Clients delve into the 12 steps through off-site AA/NA meetings. A greater understanding of the steps is established during group work.
Family members can participate in treatment twice a week during family night, which includes educational lectures and group therapy. Clients also have the option of bringing family members into their individual therapy and for visits during the weekends.
