NuWay House, Inc. Review
Founded by a group of sober alcoholics, the NuWay House, Inc. (NUWAY) offers residential treatment for co-occurring disorders just outside Minneapolis, Minnesota. With a board of trustees, founding president Gordon C. Allen was able to collect $20,000 from 2,000 people in recovery to start the project in 1966.
Two recovery homes—NuWay I and NuWay II—both offer individualized recovery from chemical dependency along with mental health services for clients with dual diagnoses.
Accommodations and Food
Both of the residential units house up to 20 individuals with two clients to a room. Each is located within two blocks of the oldest Alano Society in the world and within walking distance to dozens of 12-step meetings, in addition to many neighboring support groups, group homes and other resources dedicated to success in recovery.
All meals are prepared in the homes by a professional cook.
Treatment and Staff
As the first organization in the nation to offer a Co-Occurring Disorders Program (CDP), NuWay aims to simultaneously enhance clients’ knowledge of both chemical dependency and mental health concerns, using a comprehensive approach with 12-step emphasis as well as medication and psychiatric treatment. Developed in association with the Dartmouth Medical School and the Hazelden Foundation, the CDP’s goal is to allow residents to reintegrate into the community as full-functioning individuals.
The ideal program length for residential clients is 75-90 days. All of the treatment plans are individualized and developed by the case manager and patient to ensure each client’s specific needs are met.
Other therapies include individual therapy, treatment for co-occurring disorders and group therapy as well as relapse prevention, coping skills and independent living skills. Aftercare, case management and referrals are offered as clients reintegrate in the community.
Each house has staff members with expertise in the fields of addiction, counseling, divinity and social work; that includes two psychologists and a registered nurse who specializes in co-occurring disorders.
In Summary
With a robust local recovery network, NuWay House, Inc. is a strong option for people who don’t mind the Minnesota winters, are seeking care for co-occurring disorders and want to employ a 12-step approach to their recovery.
