The Basics
The Northwest Change Program is an outpatient treatment option designed specifically for adolescents ages 12 to 18. CHANGE, which stands for Chemical Health and New Growth Experiences, is a service of Tri-County Community Corrections and operates out of the Polk County Justice Center. It uses therapy and education to treat clients with substance abuse issues.
Treatment and Staff
The treatment program is approximately 20 weeks long and is divided into two sections. The first section is eight weeks and consists of group and individual therapy sessions. Group therapy covers anger management and relapse prevention, while the individual therapy uses evidence-based treatment including CBT, DBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and exposure therapy.
In the first part of the program, clients meet up to three times a week for about three hours at a time. Part two, which lasts about 12 weeks depending on the client’s progress, is a step-down option that reduces treatment to about once a week for three hours. During this time, clients still receive individual therapy but it may be scheduled on a different day than group if that suits the client. The same treatment methods are used as in the first half of the program.
Clients in both stages are required to comply with a contract that says they will abstain from drugs and alcohol during treatment. This policy depends on the honor system because random drug tests are not part of the services at Northwest CHANGE.
The counselors running the programs at Northwest CHANGE are all addiction specialists, including LADCs and LMFTs.
Extras
A program known as Options for Change is a family program designed for parents of clients. This program runs for about eight weeks and teaches parents how to manage adolescents with substance abuse issues.
