Northwest Behavioral Health Review
Since 1992, Northwest Behavioral Health has offered outpatient and community support services to residents of Jacksonville, Florida who struggle with severe mental health issues as well as substance abuse. Clients at this nondescript building are dealing with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression and chemical dependency. Basically, Northwest Behavioral Health helps people with at risk behaviors that have made their lives unmanageable, offering supportive housing to those who meet certain income qualifications in an apartment complex called The Enclaves.
This program is not a pit stop. There is no set graduation day; clients arrange with the Northwest Behavioral Health team how long and how much they should participate in an outpatient setting for the best possible recovery.
Treatment and Staff
Northwest Behavioral Health is open during normal business hours, from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday though appointments with clinical staff can be arranged outside of these hours. When clients arrive, they receive a biopsychosocial assessment to give the Northwest Behavioral clinical team an opportunity to target the main problems a client is facing and the aims of his recovery as well as allowing them to make the appropriate referrals. An assessment may also yield important information about mental health issues the client faces and whether medication is in order. Group therapy has been discontinued there but in individual counseling, clients discuss their mental illnesses as well as at-risk behaviors and how those manifest. With the help of a therapist, clients are meant to assess their living situations, work situations, relationships—all the factors that contribute to their social environments—and consider how to restore those unhealthy elements of their lives.
Clients struggling with substance abuse have the opportunity to discuss their addiction with a therapist, who makes suggestions for how to proceed, but they have to go outside the NBH community for 12-step programs and support groups. This program is far more concerned with co-occurring disorders.
While Northwest Behavioral Health no longer provides group alcohol and drug counseling, it does offer DUI classes and staff members help clients get their licenses back. Another service Northwest Behavioral provides is HIV/AIDS testing.
There are two consulting medical doctors on staff, one for the adult program and one for the children’s program, to provide psychiatric services and prescribe medication.
In Summary
Northwest Behavioral Health’s motto is to give life a new direction. There doesn’t appear to be a specific treatment philosophy at the heart of Northwest Behavioral Health’s program, other than to offer a helping hand. The mental health issues their clients struggle with are so myriad that recovery work happens primarily in individual therapy. This is not the right outpatient program for someone struggling primarily with drug and alcohol addiction who wants to find a community of sober peers. But it’s Florida, so a place like that won’t be hard to find.
