New VisionThe Basics

Based in South Carolina, New Vision Recovery (NVR) is a nonprofit organization providing faith-based sober living homes for both men and women. Started in September of 2008, NVR originally offered only a nine bed home for women. The second home for men opened in October of 2009. NVR currently operates five sober living homes divided into two newcomers homes and three three-quarter houses for residents preparing to reintegrate into the community. Growing over the years, the staff and house members strive to create a family-like community that provides residents with tools and support for living a recovery lifestyle.

Accommodations and Amenities

Overall, NVR can accommodate a total of 38 men and women in their five sober living homes. All homes are located within a 15 mile radius. Both “newcomer” houses are single family three bedroom homes accommodating nine residents who sleep three per room. Rooms are furnished with one twin bed and one bunk bed, a shared closet space and two shared dressers. Both houses have furnished living rooms with couches and cable TV and a landline telephone.

The communal dining areas and kitchens provide space for daily group meals and all appliances including refrigerator, dishwasher and a microwave. The kitchens have ample storage space for communal and individual client food. The homes also have on-site laundry and a backyard with a barbecue grill.

The three three-quarter homes offer more privacy and fewer rules for more independent clients. Two of these homes are for men and one is for women. Each home offers three bedrooms shared between five or six residents and one master suite for either a house manager or a senior house member. Some bedrooms are private and others are larger with double-occupancy. Each shared room has a closet and one dresser for roommates to share. An extra storage closet is available between bedrooms. Clients share two bathrooms with showers and linens are provided.

The living room areas offer comfortable seating, cable TV, landline telephone and a computer area for residential use. The kitchen and dining room areas have a dining table, chairs and a breakfast bar. The kitchen has all appliances and utensils for meal preparation and a pantry is available for food storage. All homes have on-site laundry next to the kitchen and a garage plus driveway for parking cars. Houses are located close to a church, meetings and employment opportunities.

Rules and Regulations

NVR requires all residents to stay for six months total in their home, moving from one of the gender-specific newcomer homes to one of the three-quarter homes after two to three months of residence. Moving out of the newcomer home depends on the resident’s behavior, whether they abide by the rules and their progression through the 12-steps. Residents must attend 90 meetings in their first 90 days of recovery and get a sponsor within two weeks. After their first 90 days, residents are permitted to drop their meeting attendance to four or five per week.

NVR is a faith-based sober living home with an emphasis on faith, to this end, all residents must participate in church activities five days per week. These activities include bible study, attending worship services at a church of their choice and volunteer work through their church. Residents are not allowed to miss these activities unless they have work obligations or classes for school.

Each resident must either have a job or be actively searching for employment during their stay. A $150 dollar rent is expected to be paid on a weekly basis without exception. This cost covers all utilities and supplies, though residents are expected to provide their own food, toiletries and special products. Drug tests cost a small fee but are only administered when an individual is under suspicion for relapse.

NVR has a zero tolerance policy for drug and alcohol use. If an individual comes home intoxicated they will be asked to leave for the safety of other residents. All house members have a curfew; newcomers must be home by 10 pm weeknights and 10:30 pm on weekends. The three-quarter homes have an 11 pm curfew during the week and midnight on weekends. Each resident is slowly given more responsibilities, chores and opportunities for growth during their stay at NVR.

In Summary

Offering gender-specific sober living for men and women as well as transitional living for clients who are ready for more autonomy and independence, NVR grows with its in their recovery. Potential residents can expect to work the 12-steps and commit to being active members of the church of their choice. While this faith-based, no-frills environment may not be for everyone, it is a great choice for those who want to combine church, the 12-steps and fellowship into their recovery foundation.
