New Life Spirit Recovery Review
Located in Huntington Beach, California, New Life Spirit Recovery is a faith-based residential treatment program that Dr. Robert Tucker founded 10 years ago after experiencing a continuous pattern of relapse. Unable to stop using drugs and alcohol, he turned his life over to a Higher Power to achieve sobriety and then dedicated himself to helping others with recovery. After studying addiction counseling for years, he designed a program that, rather than focus on group therapy, provides intense one-on-one attention in addition to Christ-centered activities such as Bible study and prayer.
Accommodations and Food
New Life Spirit Recovery offers separate gender-specific residences, with women living in an eight-bed home called The Grace House. Bedrooms are shared between two clients and feature twin-sized beds. The comfortable setting also includes a small kitchen, dining room, fireplace and television. There are crosses on the walls and other religious items placed around the house for decoration.
Male clients live in the Jeremiah House, an eight-bed home that features a similar layout to the women’s home and is a short distance from stores, restaurants and beaches. By taking walks in the neighborhood or a quick trip to pick up toiletries, clients can enjoy a little bit of freedom during their stay. To ensure sobriety, all clients are tested on a daily basis.
Residents cook their own meals, either as a group or solo effort. After receiving nutritional guidance from a registered dietician, they can make healthy food choices during weekly grocery trips.
While this facility doesn’t offer a place to work out, trips to the beach can be made on rented bikes. Clients can also take long walks to keep fit.
Treatment and Staff
Each client goes through a 30-to-90 day clinical and spiritual process involving weekly individual therapy, group therapy, meditation, nutrition groups and family therapy. Group topics include life skills, relapse prevention, processing and codependency.
Treatment also involves a large dose of religion, with clients attending church four times a week, in addition to prayer group and Bible study. Instead of going to traditional AA/NA meetings, clients follow Celebrate Recovery, which is a Christian based, 12-step group.
A five-day, medically monitored detox is available at a nearby facility for an additional $3,000. During this time, there are no religious activities as clients focus solely on stabilization.
For those dealing with mental health issues, a consulting psychiatrist is available on a weekly basis for medication management. The rest of staff consists of a medical doctor, nurses and many CDACs.
