NewLifeHouseThe Basics

Located in the small south-central Oklahoma town of Durant, New Life House  is a small sober living that aims to provide a stable living situation for women who are seeking recovery. Although its program is non-therapeutic, New Life offers peer support and encouragement. Many residents have either graduated from a drug treatment program or have been recently released from prison. There are also drug-court participants who need the additional structure and support of sober living. Residents are welcome to stay at the program as long as they need to, provided they follow house rules. Residents are only expected to move on when a discharge plan is in place that is designed to ensure self-reliance and long-term sobriety.

Accommodations and Amenities

A farmhouse style home in a rural suburban neighborhood, New Life House’s cozy interior is heavy on natural wood, with lots of open areas and a comforting, “home-style” vibe. It features a large backyard with a patio and barbecue grill for residents’ use. The house can accommodate six women in three cozy bedrooms. There are no private accommodations. The property has an outdoor deck with a barbecue grill, a large backyard and comfortable common areas.

The requirements for staying at New Life are fairly standard as sober livings go: residents must be detoxed and free of severe mental health issues. They must be working within two weeks of moving in, attend at least three 12-step meetings per week and contribute to upkeep of the house. Use of drugs and alcohol is not permitted and clients are drug- and alcohol-tested randomly.

Residents of New Life are responsible for preparing their own meals. Those who are eligible are expected to apply for food stamps and donate to the pool of common food, but ineligible residents are still provided for.

New Life is owned by Tammy Cross, a local businesswoman, and employs a director to oversee day-to-day house operations, admit residents and assist them in working toward their individual goals.

Extras

New Life offers life skills training for household management and help with financial skills and budgeting.

In Summary

New Life House is a friendly, intimate sober living house, geared toward women who are ready to make a serious commitment to sobriety. There isn’t a ton of frills, but there is enough structure and peer support to potentially make New Life a good choice for someone looking for a smaller place to continue their journey of recovery. The price isn’t too shabby, either: residents pay just $80 per week to stay at the house and that includes room, board and transportation, if needed.
