Rosewood Santa MonicaRosewood Santa Monica Review

Founded in 2007, Santa Monica, California’s Rosewood Santa Monica is an outpatient facility that treats eating disorders exclusively, but with a specific program that recognizes how substance abuse can play into them. A branch of Arizona’s Rosewood Ranch, the facility offers three levels for both adults and adolescents: extended day treatment, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). In addition to these very structured programs, Rosewood Santa Monica also offers nearby transitional living facilities. It treats anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and co-occurring disorders.

Accommodations and Food

Adults in extended day treatment, PHP or IOP can choose to live in one of Rosewood’s transitional homes. There are three homes for women and one for men. For women, the three homes correspond to different treatment levels. Each home can host around six people in double-occupancy rooms. The homes are well-kept, charming and stylish, and all are in Santa Monica within walking distance of the beach. Each has on-site staff members that stay overnight to supervise clients and ensure group attendance.

Those staying in the houses are responsible for their own food supply, though each location features a shared kitchen. Clients in the top level of care eat most of their meals at the outpatient offices, not at home; lower-level care houses require more independent meal planning. Clients work with a dietitian and treatment team to devise their own recipes meal plans for food prepared at home.

Treatment and Staff

After assessment, clients are prescribed an individualized treatment program. The extended day program includes 11 hours of treatment spread over six days a week. PHP consists of six-and-a-half hours of treatment six days a week while IOP meets three-and-a-half hours five times a week. Treatment includes group and individual therapy sessions with a therapist, a registered dietitian and a psychiatrist. Those in extended care see a therapist twice a week in addition to the above groups.

Group therapy includes CBT, DBT, body image groups, addiction education, psychoeducation, meal planning and nutritional education, relapse prevention, mindful eating groups and other experiential therapies. Group sizes are kept small with around six to eight people each, to ensure that all clients get enough attention.

Because of the focus on eating disorders, food and meal planning are a major part of treatment. Those in the extended day program have all three meals a day (and two snacks) at the outpatient facility. Those in PHP have two meals and one snack at the facility while IOP clients only have one meal on-site.

There is a dietary team that consults with all clients to provide individualized meals according to the clients’ weight goals and specific eating disorder. All food is prepared by nearby caterers and includes a broad menu, and in the dining area is a refrigerator where clients can pick out their own snacks when at the outpatient facilities.

One of the key goals at Rosewood Santa Monica is to eliminate food fear among clients. With this in mind, the refrigerator is stocked with everything from fruit to cookies and chips. Instead of labeling foods as “good” and “bad,” the staff encourages clients to get comfortable with a range of foods. At the same time, meals tend to be well-balanced and on the healthy side to get clients all their nutritional needs.

Clients who participate in the transitional housing program are able to go grocery shopping with housemates and staff members on Sundays. Staff members support clients as they choose foods that fit with their meal plans, knowing this can be very stressful for those with acute eating disorders. Residents in the housing program are supported by staff and their peers with life skill education so they can reintegrate into society once they leave treatment. Adolescents and adults are treated separately.

Extras

Aside from the different treatment tracks listed above, Rosewood also offers experiential therapy including family sculpting, art and music therapy, yoga, equine therapy and bibliotherapy.

In Summary

Adults and adolescents suffering from acute eating disorders who need extensive treatment along with dual diagnosis care will find Rosewood Santa Monica a great fit. The program’s flexible levels of care, housing options and high attention to meal planning can certainly benefit those struggling with various eating disorders and help them reintegrate into society. While Rosewood stresses privacy and the dignity of its clients, its price point and exclusive location make it a popular celebrity rehab as well which is worth consideration—clients might encounter paparazzi.
