The New Direction Review

Co-directors of The New Direction, husband and wife team Matt and Margaret Batson founded this intimate facility in 1977 with the hopes of providing quality inpatient substance abuse treatment for their clients based on the 12-steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Over 30 years later the Bastons have maintained their strict adherence to their philosophy in treating clients of all ages and backgrounds at their turn-of-the-century farmhouse, nestled in the beautiful Catskill Mountains of New York.

Accommodations and Food

The accommodations at ND are special; a large historical farmhouse surrounded by over 200 acres of rolling grass hills, trout-filled streams and a pond where clients can swim during summer months or skate in winter. The farmhouse can accommodate 10 clients at a time, with two clients per room. Bedrooms are cozy, with warm printed wallpaper and shabby-chic linens and furnishings. The living room boasts a stone fireplace, comfortable overstuffed sofas and a TV.

Outdoor common areas include a covered porch with a lounging area and benches placed around the grounds to take in the pastoral scenery. The office where counseling sessions are held has lofted beamed ceilings and the “exercise barn” contains weights and exercise machines.

Hearty home cooked meals are served family-style on a wooden farm table in the dining room three times a day with dietary special restrictions and requests accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

The 21-28 day inpatient program at ND is for clients who have already gone though detox or have been clean for at least 72 hours. The program is thoroughly based on the 12-step model of treatment and clients are required to attend daily on-site meetings and complete all step-work and assignments. There are also two-hour group sessions in the morning and evening, leaving the rest of the day open for step study and relaxation or scheduled individual sessions.

ND is a mom and pop operation, run by the founders, who have decades of sobriety. Alumni volunteers lead meetings, as well.

Extras

The family program at ND is highly encouraged, and loved ones are welcome during visiting hours every Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. There is also a seminar for family every Saturday at 1 pm which covers topics such as chemical dependency, the disease concept of addiction, and an introduction to Al-Anon.

Because of the facility’s scenic surroundings there are plenty of natural amenities clients may take advantage of at ND. With a pond for swimming or skating, acres of meadows for hiking, trout streams for fishing, gym equipment and a library, ND has something for everyone.

In Summary

The New Direction combines the luxury of its beautiful location with the strict treatment structure of the 12-step program to create a top-notch rehab. The small nature of the program insures individual care and attention and the emphasis on AA and family involvement rounds out a successful course of treatment. The grounds provide tranquility and the staff is experienced and committed to the client’s recovery. Those looking for a solid 12 step-based rehab at a reasonable price would do well at The New Direction.
