MFI Recovery CenterMFI Recovery Center Review

MFI Recovery Center, also known as My Family, Inc., has been serving Riverside, California and its surrounding communities since 1972. With multiple residences and outpatient centers, this non-profit treatment facility employs a combination of 12-step based recovery methods and innovative, evidenced-based therapy. The goal is to get patients’ lives back on track, helping them to understand why not taking action is no longer an option.

Accommodations and Food

There are a total of 150 beds available across five different residential treatment locations throughout the My Family network. Firmly believing men and women develop chemical dependency issues for different reasons and best respond to gender-specific treatment, this rehab completely separates its programming. For example, at the La Vista Recovery and Wellness Center there is a particular emphasis on the needs of older women in the community, while the primary residence for women with children is A Women’s Place. Located in Riverside, this facility is very child-friendly (play areas, cribs, high chairs) and is even walking distance to an elementary school. At the University location, in Riverside’s Eastside neighborhood, women share rooms in an apartment setting.

There are two residential options for men, both in Riverside, but the Haskell House is in a more suburban location, close to the MFI primary care facility while Woodcrest is a more private, rustic setting. The semi-private rooms in all of the residences are minimally furnished but comfortable, equipped with anywhere from two to four single beds and one dresser and/or nightstand per client.

At the Haskell House and University homes, clients have treatment partially in residence and partially at the primary care center on Arlington Avenue. At the other three locations, all treatment occurs in-house.

Food is usually provided by food banks and is prepared by the clients themselves. Exercise and physical activity aren’t a huge component of treatment here so there are not any specifically designated fitness areas but clients do have the option of walking outside with other residents and counselors.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at all MFI locations centers on the Matrix Model of therapy. While the staff does include psychiatrists and Masters level therapists, and each client is assigned a counselor upon admission, the client is expected to be primarily accountable for his or her own sobriety and well-being, checking in privately with that counselor only once a week.

Of all the above components listed, 12-step work and family involvement are the foundation and most important aspects. Clients are required to attend meetings, encouraged to get sponsors and to work the steps. In keeping with their insistence that family play an important role in a patient’s recovery, MFI offers a family program of support groups, educational offerings and counseling with the families of its clients. Counseling can be tailored for martial issues, between spouses or for the spouse of someone in treatment, and for children from divorced or alcoholic families.

In Summary

The living environment at the MFI Recovery Center residences is pretty basic but overall, former clientele, both young and old, report positive results. It is important to note that a lot of the residents at MFI are court ordered and not necessarily in treatment by choice—a fact that lends the claims of prolonged sobriety and successful reintroduction into society a little more weight.
