South Loop ApartmentsThe Basics

South Loop Apartments is operated by Mercy Housing Lakefront, part of one of the nation’s largest affordable housing organizations. It does not offer specific treatment for addiction or for addicts in recovery but provides inexpensive sober living, employment resources and skills training as well as medical and counseling services to support recovery. The South Loop neighborhood of downtown Chicago was once rather dicey but now is quite appealing and residents enjoy living only a few blocks away from Museum Campus and half a mile from a subway station. South Loop Apartments has been serving both single occupants and families for about 14 years.

Accommodations and Amenities

The nine stories of the South Loop Apartments building can accommodate up to 207 residents, who occupy single rooms or upgrade to multiple occupancy, with up three bedrooms if they have families. Each room has a small kitchen and a bathroom. Residents have access to a computer lab with 13 computers, a community kitchen, a used clothing center, on-site laundry facilities and a 1,400 square-foot outdoor garden as well as a rooftop garden.

Residents are responsible for buying and preparing their own food at South Loop Apartments. Several grocery stores are nearby.

Rules and Regulations

Treatment at South Loop Apartments includes access to a job training and employment center and employment resource library, computer training such as IT certification, computer and tech support, job readiness training and financial literacy training as well as case management and referral services. The organization also partners with local medical facilities and offers affordable medical treatment as well as referrals for mental health needs.

South Loop Apartments encourages residents to be active, independent members of society so they do not offer set daily treatment. Residents should see administrative staff or tenant managers for specific details.

Staff includes administrative staff, a case manager and tenant managers, who provide general support for all residents.

Extras

Because of South Loop Apartments’ long-term support model, it does not offer much in terms of aftercare. The computer lab is open to the public and they offer referrals to other services as needed. Employment services are limited to residents at this time.

In Summary

South Loop Apartments may be a good fit for an addict in recovery looking to lay roots down in the Chicago area or those with families. It’s important to note that while the building is well kept and the program is full of practical support, it’s nevertheless not ideal for those seeking addiction-specific treatment. The facility is always in high demand, so expect to spend a varying amount of time on the waiting list before admission. Once admitted, residents must sign a lease.
