Memphis Recovery Centers Review
With more than 85 years of experience, Memphis Recovery Centers treats both teens and adults with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, providing individualized and gender-specific care at an affordable rate. From residential treatment to outpatient, this facility follows a 12-step template as they guide clients back to health and wholeness.
Accommodations and Food
The facility occupies a converted office building near downtown Memphis, with 24 beds in a co-ed environment. The atmosphere is institutional rather than homey although the basic necessities are taken care of. Rooms are shared between two people dorm-style and feature twin sized beds and adequate dresser space. Therapy rooms and the dining hall are just a short walk away from the bedrooms.
All meals are served cafeteria style and eaten as a group in the dining hall. Food options are staples such as soups, sandwiches, pasta, pizza and burgers. Special dietary requests can be accommodated on a case-to-case basis.
While the facility does not offer a full gym, a small selection of exercise equipment is available for use during free time.
Treatment and Staff
Through a highly skilled team of admission counselors, therapists, counselors, teachers, psychologists, family therapists and medical staff, clients are well taken care of during the 30- to 45-day stay. While there is no medically monitored, on-site detox, the program can make a referral to a local detox facility. Upon entering treatment, clients receive a physical and psychiatric assessment. From there, they follow a steady schedule of weekly individual therapy, group therapy, 12-step meetings and educational lectures. Group topics include trauma, relapse prevention, processing and family connections.
Clients are introduced to the 12 steps through daily on- and off-site AA/NA meetings and group discussions. While sponsorship is not required, clients are welcome to take advantage of that part of the program if they choose.
The 20-bed youth program is for teens between the ages of 13 and 17 and focuses on life skills, anger management, art therapy and drug/alcohol education classes. There is also an in-house school for youth in treatment that, with its low student-to-teacher ratio, provides them with individualized attention. Credits gained in this program can often be transferred to the client’s original school.
Family therapy can be done with the individual therapist on a need-to-need basis. Families are also invited in for some group work and educational lectures.
