Meadows Edge Recovery CenterMeadows Edge Recovery Center Review

Meadows Edge Recovery Center founder Dr. John Femino, a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, opened the doors to his progressive Rhode Island substance abuse treatment clinic for men and women in 1994. Established in the renovated historic Lafayette Mill, this North Kingstown program now provides Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and regular outpatient treatment for those wanting a better life.

Treatment and Staff

MERC is a 12-step-oriented program and clients gather every morning from 8 am to 9 am for a meeting, with another in the evening at varying times (usually either 8 or 8:30 pm). Additionally, this clinic helps clients obtain a sponsor—though sponsorship is not a requirement. Clients who do not wish to have AA in their treatment are also welcome at MERC.

MERC uses the Stages of Change model for their four-week IOP, which includes group therapy three or four times a week.  Treatment techniques include CBT and EMDR. While one month is the typical length of treatment, individual clients may require more time.

For regular outpatient treatment, individual therapy occurs weekly, then decreases to once a month as clients progress with their treatment. A staff doctor provides medication management.

MERC offers outpatient detox. The length of treatment depends on the client’s drug or alcohol use, and the program uses Suboxone to wean clients from opioids. Dual diagnosis support is available but limited to depression and anxiety; MERC considers mental health a secondary issue and the doctor does not prescribe psychiatric medication.

MERC employs three doctors of osteopathic medicine, a psychiatric nurse practitioner and 10 counselors, with an even mix of men and women. The staff includes two licensed mental health counselors who are also licensed clinical doctors of psychology and LCDCs. Group sizes vary, so the staff-to-client ratio fluctuates between one-to-10 and one-to-18.

Extras

MERC also has an outpatient program for adolescents and is in the process of implementing a SMART Recovery option for clients who may have an aversion to the 12-step method. Criminal justice and DUI services are also available.

The “Concerned Person Program” encourages family involvement in recovery support and education groups. On Thursdays,  a family counselor leads a lecture from 6 pm to 7 pm where family members learn rules and dynamics, support, limits and how to prevent enabling behavior. MERC also allows family members to meet with the client’s individual counselor. The meeting must be scheduled.

In Summary

MERC prides itself on having a wide variety of staff including younger individuals who have the latest expertise and training as well as staff who have been in the field for 20 to 30 years. Clients receive the latest evidence-based outpatient recovery at an affordable price.
