McKinley Hall Women'sThe Basics

About 30 miles east of Dayton, McKinley Hall is an outpatient treatment center in Springfield, Ohio designed specifically for women. With multiple recovery programs to choose from—including Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), traditional outpatient, transitional housing, aftercare and vocational rehabilitation—McKinley welcomes any woman looking for a gender-specific treatment and recovery support.

Treatment and Staff

While McKinley does not have on-site detox unit, a staff doctor is available who specializes in administering Suboxone for clients in need of detox from opiates. This three-day process involves daily visits for treatment. Clients requiring detox from alcohol are referred to an outside facility. Once a course of treatment is determined at intake, clients receive case management to aid in their recovery.

Women are typically treated at McKinley for up to one year—beginning with IOP followed by stepping down to regular outpatient and finally to an aftercare program. During IOP, women attend group and individual therapy for a total of nine hours a week. Groups run in the morning from 9 am to 12 pm. Early recovery clients attend groups on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays and advanced-recovery clients attend two days a week—Tuesdays and Fridays. The traditional outpatient program has fewer hours of commitment, and is also available for clients with previous treatment who just need support with their current recovery program.

Group discussion topics include trauma, grief, parenting, healthy living, nutrition and even financial education. Women learn how to cope with everyday life challenges without the use of substances. Mental-health components include DBT, CBT and dual diagnosis support—but treatment plans are individualized. Family counseling is also available and clients can either attend counseling with their loved ones or separately. There are no alternative therapies on site, but clients are informed of these methods during relapse prevention education and referrals are made.

McKinley uses the 12 step modality and women are required to attend three off-site AA/NA meetings per week. As additional recovery support, every Monday there is an on-site optional Big Book study meeting. Should women prefer, they are permitted to attend church or Al-Anon instead. While transportation to meetings is not provided, McKinley does offer rides to and from IOP.

In addition to a medical doctor, McKinley employs five therapists, four case managers and childcare professionals with a staff-to-client ratio no larger than one-to-22. All therapists are either LCSWs or CADCs and all personnel are female.

Extras

Once clients have completed IOP or the traditional outpatient program, they may participate in McKinley’s aftercare program which includes monthly group meetings and one-on-one sessions with a counselor.

There is also a children’s program which assists at-risk youth with addiction education, support groups and coordination with school and court officials as needed. Transitional housing is available for families in need, as well as Vocational Rehabilitation services.

All IOP clients have free access to McKinley’s on-site exercise facility. The Friday groups enjoy “Fitness Friday,” a communal work out session where clients support one another in physical recovery. On occasion, a health-department professional will provide lectures on topics like STDs. Additionally, McKinley has sober-living houses and three fellowship clubs designed specifically for the local recovery community to socialize and support one another with outings, dances, softball games and weekend camping trips to Gatlinburg.

In Summary

McKinley is a community-oriented recovery program with a compassionate staff who maintain close relationships with clients, ensuring their attendance and commitment to their program. Emphasis is placed on fostering relationships with fellows in recovery through extra-curricular activities and programs, setting each client up with a network of support. While McKinley is somewhat costly for an outpatient facility, all treatment costs are a la carte and their comprehensive program is committed to the success of women in need from all walks of life.
