Malvern Institute Review

In 1946, two medical doctors who were also AA members created the C. Dudley Saul Clinic to help alcoholics and addicts in Philadelphia. After several name changes and relocations, the clinic settled in Malvern, a suburb of Philly, and is known today as the Malvern Institute. The rehab provides inpatient, detox, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) substance abuse and addiction treatment services to adults suffering from chemical dependency. The Malvern 90-Day Model of Care reflects their belief that successful recovery requires at least 90 days of treatment.

Accommodations and Food

Malvern Institute has two coed residences, with a combined 80-bed capacity, one at its headquarters and the other at Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. The sprawling Malvern Institute has a clinical ambience, while the Willow Grove residency is an old stucco colonial manor. In the 20-bed residential detox program, clients share triple-occupancy rooms. While the residential program offers a few private rooms, clients are usually housed in triple- or quadruple-occupancy dorms. Some rooms have private bathrooms.

Full-time chefs prepare nutritious meals. Fresh fruit is served daily and a salad bar is available at lunch and dinner. While cell phones and other electronics are forbidden, a prepaid phone card is allowed.

Treatment and Staff

Detox length is between five and seven days, while an inpatient stay is 90 days. Upon intake, clients receive complete assessments and individualized treatment plans. Malvern Institute uses the 12-step model and evidence-based practices, including CBT and DBT.

Treatment includes three daily group sessions, two weekly individual sessions, family therapy and daily attendance at in-house AA/NA meetings. Dual diagnosis support is provided at both residential facilities. Out-of-pocket detox cost is $600 per day and inpatient care costs $500 per day.

The staff includes Master’s-level therapists, physicians, nurse practitioners, staff nurses and administrative support.

Extras

The Recovery Oriented Community (ROC) is Malvern Institute’s aftercare program that offers recovery support to former residents and their families. The family component of the program covers topics such as healthy boundaries and overcoming codependency issues.

Medical and pain-management services are offered to those who are seeking recovery but have painful conditions, such as neck, back or spinal injuries and fibromyalgia.

In Summary

Malvern Institute is an excellent option for clients desiring a 12-step approach, comprehensive evidence-based treatment and medication-assisted services. With two locations and a strong alumni and family program, it provides a supportive recovery community that can last well beyond the 90 days of treatment.
