The overrunning theme at Legacy Freedom Treatment Centers is the promise of “addiction recovery, not rehab.” With three locations—in Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina and Columbus, Ohio, Legacy Freedom swears by an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that rivals any inpatient service. While a lot of rehabs claim they offer individualized treatment and there is no “one size fits all” approach, this one goes above and beyond to truly embody it.

Legacy Freedom Treatment Centers offers 30- to 90-day IOPs at all of their locations. The exterior of all three locations is reminiscent of traditional office buildings where one might go to a regular doctor’s office. However, once inside, there are brightly colored rooms, a yoga studio bathed in lots of natural light and comfortable meeting spaces. Their curriculum is holistic programming specifically not based on 12-step recovery. Instead, they place the upmost importance on discovering each resident’s unique underlying cause for substance abuse and cultivating his or her life purpose. Former clients repeatedly praise how they learned to identify why they became addicted then in turn slowly figured out how to live their life with passion and purpose.

Treatment and Staff

The program utilizes a combination of traditional group therapy (three times a week) and individual therapy (twice a week, at least) as well as a multitude of alternative therapies including equine, EMDR, sound, acupuncture, yoga, nutritional, gender-specific, adventure and massage therapy. Clients receive a minimum of 11 hours of treatment a week (most IOP programs only offer nine). Their curriculum is strictly outpatient but they do provide residency for any client needing a medical detox before beginning treatment. Having said that, they do not offer or support wean-off drugs for opiate addicts such as Suboxone or methadone at any of their facilities.

There are a lot of options for family involvement at Legacy Freedom. Once a month, there is “Family Night” where all clients and family members come together for a three-hour group therapy session. There are also bi-monthly “Family-Only” 90-minute sessions solely for family members of clients to get additional education on how to support and understand their loved one during their time in treatment. Family members also have the option to schedule individual sessions with a therapist at Legacy Freedom.

A myriad of treatment aspects equates to a myriad of different professions on staff. Both the two North Carolina locations and the Columbus facility employ a medical doctor, nurse practitioner, acupuncturist, massage therapist and several traditional therapists and addiction counselors. There are also martial arts and yoga instructors as well as life coaches. Past clients praise the staff for being caring, understanding and extremely powerful as group therapy leaders. Their staff-to-client ratio is actually one-to-one, something most rehabs cannot claim.

Extras

Legacy Freedom Treatment Centers offers equine therapy, acupuncture, yoga and massage in addition to adventure therapy. This can include walking, hiking, biking, tennis, team sports, kayaking and other outdoor pursuits.

In Summary

The goal at Legacy Freedom Treatment Centers is to help each client discover his or her life’s purpose. To that end, they offer a holistic approach to treatment not based on 12-step recovery. Although they don’t necessary advocate 12-step meetings in their program, they don’t hesitant to direct people nearing the end of the program to local meetings. This is What Color is Your Parachute kind of recovery at a shockingly low price.
