Journey UtahJourney Utah Review

Journey Utah, a former bed and breakfast outside of Salt Lake City at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains, is among a collection of luxury residential treatment facilities in the Elements Behavioral Health network. Journey Utah offers comprehensive care and specializes in holistic, dual diagnosis substance abuse treatment.

Accommodations and Food

At Journey Utah, no more than 16 clients live together in a lavish mountain chalet with incredible views. Outside, the grounds, decorated with koi ponds and walking paths, have a fairy tale quality. The rooms are all large and comfortably decorated. There is a fireplace in the family room and the flower painting above the mantel quite appropriately reads, “Beautiful.” Below that, a small cursive sculpture instructs: relax—something which shouldn’t be hard to do here.

There are two options for sleeping arrangements: a private room or a shared suite with one other person (whether or not clients can get their own room depends on the number of people there at the time; depending on that, a private room may cost more). The private rooms have queen-sized beds and the shared rooms have two full-sized beds. All bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious and well appointed.

The goal at Journey Utah is to promote healthy lifestyle changes in addition to recovery. To that end, a uniformed gourmet chef prepares three healthy meals a day and clients are provided with nutrition therapy and education.

Treatment and Staff

The 28-day primary residential treatment program at Journey Utah is highly individualized. Upon admission, each client is assigned two therapists, an addiction counselor and a Master’s-level therapist. Compared to other treatment programs, clients here receive a great deal of individual attention, seeing both the therapist and the counselor twice a week. The client-to-staff ratio is a respectable two-to-one. In addition to the above-mentioned specialists, a naturopathic physician oversees medical care at Journey Utah with two board-certified physicians and a psychiatric nurse practitioner.

Clients are introduced to 12-step concepts and taken off-site to AA meetings, but Journey Utah believes in a holistic approach to treatment. Some of the therapeutic modalities available here are art therapy, drumming therapy, CBT, EMDR and mindfulness meditation. Clients are encouraged to hit the gym or try a yoga class. In addition, massages, vitamin B injections and nutritional counseling are provided as part of the guide to living well (a certain number of massages are included in the fee). Family relationships are another important part of treatment and family therapy sessions begin while clients are in residence and continue into the aftercare program.

All clients form some kind of continuing care program with their counselor before leaving treatment. This includes outpatient treatment, alumni meetings, support groups and activities, as well as telephone counseling and recovery coaching. For clients who feel they might benefit from continued rehabilitation, Journey Utah provides long-term housing at their Creekside facility. At Creekside, clients remain in a structured, supportive setting for eight weeks or more. Treatment includes four individual therapy sessions per week, weekly family therapy, yoga, meditation and a private chef.

Extras

In addition to the art therapy, drumming therapy, meditation, yoga and massage mentioned above, Journey Utah also offers access to a sweat lodge.

In Summary

Journey Utah provides comprehensive, individualized treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders in a luxurious and tranquil environment. For a comparatively affordable price, clients receive a surplus of personal attention from highly accredited staff members and numerous treatment options in recovery outside of the 12 steps.
