Inspire Malibu Review
Going against the grain of traditional rehab facilities, Inspire Malibu takes a “non-religious, non 12-step, no AA” approach to helping alcoholics and drug addicts get sober. It also treats a multitude of mental health issues as co-occurring disorders. Individualized treatment occurring on five acres in Southern California’s Malibu Valley, Inspire Malibu implements innovative and cutting edge approaches to recovery atop the bed rock of copious amounts of individual therapy.
Accommodations and Food
Inspire Malibu is actually located in Agoura Hills which is technically north of Malibu, just a few miles further inland. The interior of the house is nice and well-maintained, with granite counters and shiny wood floors though the house is positioned very close to the highway so it’s not necessarily the most secluded option. Only 11 clients are accommodated at a time and laptops and cell phones are permitted.
Food is prepared by an executive chef who brings a worldly culinary flavor to every meal.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment is based on self-empowerment and not the 12 steps. Instead, Inspire supplements their meds and psychotherapy with SMART Recovery meetings. They do include 12-step facilitation as part of their aftercare protocol because they say there is scientific evidence that it works in that context.
Inspire promises an individualized program of psychotherapy including CBT, DBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy, depending on clients’ needs. Co-occurring disorders are acknowledged and treated, particularly depression, anxiety, Borderline Personality Disorder, bipolar and ADHD. Medication is frequently prescribed, including agonist-antagonist therapy. Inspire aims to provide as comfortable a detox as possible.
Inspire was founded by Dr. Akikur Mohammad, formerly of the now-defunct Malibu Horizon. Mohammad is on the USC faculty and takes a strictly medical approach to addiction; “medication, not meditation” could be the motto at this facility. Dr. Mohammad leads a staff of 22 including recovery assistants and various specialists, such as music, yoga and eating disorder specialists.
Partial hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) treatment options are also available for eating disorders as well as drug addiction.
Extras
In addition to the aforementioned pool, Inspire provides a workout room and takes clients on trips to the beach.
In Summary
Inspire promises affordability—pretty much a necessity at this price point—and accepts some private PPO insurance plans and “creative finance options.” Addicts who aren’t interested in 12-step programs and have the money to spend will surely find something inspiring here.
