The Basics
Inspire Malibu was founded by Dr. A.R. Mohammad, who is board-certified in addiction medicine and psychiatry. Dr. Mohammad created Inspire in 2011 to provide an alternative to 12-step-oriented treatment programs. Instead, Inspire focuses on teaching clients how to regulate their behavioral and process trauma through evidence-based therapy and medication. Dr. Mohammad is the author of The Anatomy of Addiction, a well-reviewed 2016 book that details his approaches to treatment.
Inspire has a residential program and outpatient program that provide treatment at the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) levels of care. The treatment team at Inspire provides dual diagnosis support and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Suboxone and Vivitrol.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are placed on the PHP or IOP track. PHP clients attend group therapy from 11 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday. They also have individual therapy once a week. The average duration of PHP treatment is two to four weeks. IOP clients attend group therapy Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 6 pm and have individual therapy as-needed.
Groups are led by Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors including LCSWs, CADACs and psychologists. Clients with co-occurring disorders can also schedule consultations with Inspire’s psychiatrists. Therapy uses CBT, DBT, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and psychodynamic processing. Clients in need of MAT have appointments with Inspire’s physicians outside of program treatment hours to determine their course of medication and monitor their progress.
While Inspire Malibu does not require 12-step participation or actively encourage it, it recognizes the value of peer support. It encourages clients to participate in formats that work for them, including AA/NA, SMART Recovery or Refuge Recovery.
Extras
Once clients have completed their outpatient treatment plan, they can attend Inspire’s weekly alumni group each Wednesday for aftercare.
