Hyde Park Counseling CenterThe Basics

Hyde Park is a women-only residential treatment facility in Tampa, Florida. Named for its location in Tampa’s Hyde Park neighborhood, the facility is within walking distance of downtown, the University of Tampa campus, the Hillsborough River and an upscale shopping and dining district. Founded in 1996 by Fern Hill, a mental health counselor, and her husband, Fred, the facility has since joined the expansive Sunspire Health network.

Accommodations and Food

The beautiful historic home that is Hyde Park can accommodate up to 14 women and includes large front and back porches, balconies, brick walkways and manicured landscaping. Two clients share each bedroom, which are small but carpeted and cozy, with two twin-sized beds and embroidered pillows that say “Home Sweet Home.” Framed artwork featuring inspirational quotes decorate the clean white walls and a personal lamp and nightstand are within easy reach of each bed. All rooms are also equipped with walk-in closets.

The home’s communal living room offers an overstuffed sectional couch with plenty of pillows and throws, as well as a coffee table and candles for group therapy sessions. TV watching is allowed during free time before bed, although cell phones and computers are not allowed without permission from an assigned therapist. The kitchen is painted a festive green and red, with hardwood flooring and a small dining table with matching chairs.

Staff members take clients to the grocery store and pay for ingredients so clients can cook their own meals. Clients are encouraged to buy healthy food, and if they don’t know how to cook, their peers help them.

Treatment and Staff

Hyde Park’s 30-day minimum program is based on a 12-step model and clients are taken to off-site AA meetings every night. (Private Big Book studies and Overeaters Anonymous meetings are available on-site.) The program emphasizes individual therapy, which can include five sessions per week as well as daily group sessions that cover alcoholism and drug use, body image and nutrition, goal setting, family dynamics, mindful meditation, relapse prevention courses, sexuality and 12-step study.

The therapy is both CBT and DBT, while EMDR and REBT are offered for trauma. An MD is on call 24 hours a day and although detox is not available, clients are referred to local licensed facilities. Dual diagnosis support is also available.

A typical day at Hyde Park includes a 6:15 am wake-up and breakfast at 7; followed by medication from 7:45 to 8:15 am. After this, meditation and therapy sessions continue until noon when lunch is served. The afternoon is filled with group, individual or trauma therapy, as well as exercise at the YMCA, followed by dinner at 5 pm. Clients are taken to off-site AA meetings every day at 7 pm, which is followed by free time. Lights out is at 11 pm.

The eight-person staff at Hyde Park is all female and credentialed as LMHCs, LCSWs and RDs.

Extras

Exercise is an important part of the recovery process at Hyde Park. Clients go to a local YMCA twice a week and enjoy outdoor activities such blueberry picking and kayaking. Residents attend yoga on Tuesdays.

Family therapy is available and highly recommended by the facility. Hyde Park used to do this only twice a year but recently hired a family program therapist to be available once every two months.

In Summary

Same-sex programs are usually more intimate, catering to gender-specific issues, and Hyde Park is no exception. The emphasis on evidence-based care, 12-step involvement, physical fitness and family integration—along with the high quality staff—make Sunspire Health: Hyde Park a solid choice for women.
