hina-mauka-dreamstimeHina Mauka Review

Hina Mauka started out in 1965 as a 12-step based volunteer movement operating out of a Hawaiian hospital. In 1984, Hina Mauka opened its treatment center. Today, the rehab’s three facilities provide inpatient, outpatient and adolescent services. Hina Mauka’s residential program is in Kaneohe, a picturesque Oahu community known for its tropical climate.

Accommodations and Food

The adult residential program has a 48-bed capacity. Gender-specific rooms are shared, each with two twin beds, dressers and a cabinet with a sink. Two rooms share a bathroom. Residents are served two hot meals and one cold entree daily, cafeteria-style. The diverse menu includes plenty of seafood, of course, along with Mediterranean, Tex-Mex, Pan Pacific and Italian cuisine. For lunch and dinner, the salad bar is stocked up with fresh leafy greens and veggies. Coffee and nutrition snacks are provided throughout the day.

Treatment and Staff

Hina Mauka does not provide detox but they do make referrals to outside resources. Upon intake, inpatient clients undergo a full psychiatric evaluation and a urine toxicology screening. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), including Suboxone, is available and medical monitoring is provided. Treatment length varies according to a resident’s needs, but most newcomers can expect a 45-day stay. The inpatient program is comprised of a substance abuse track, a co-occurring disorders track and a criminal justice track. While clients are assigned a track, treatment plans are modified to suit each individual’s needs and residents can use components from different tracks.

The evidence-based protocol uses CBT as a major therapeutic modality. While on-site 12-step meetings are provided, residents can attend church services instead. Weekly treatment includes individual therapy, group therapy and educational sessions. The program provides a minimum of 24 hours per week of face-to-face treatment including a minimum of one hour a week of individual counseling. Group topics include Motivational Interviewing (MI), relapse prevention and anger management. Weekly gender-specific and trauma groups are offered and dual diagnosis support includes medication management and depression and anxiety issues.

Day treatment is Hina Mauka’s most intensive outpatient option, meeting for four hours a day, Monday through Friday. This program provides the same individualized, comprehensive treatment as the residential program, but allows clients to remain in their own home. It is a good option for those with a stable home life, work and family commitments and healthy social relationships.

Outpatient treatment is one to 15 hours a week, depending on the individual. Group sessions are three hours long, with a maximum of five groups per week. The program always includes assessment, initial and updated treatment planning, crisis intervention, individual and group counseling and substance abuse education. Recreational therapy, the family program and substance abuse testing are optional.

Hina Mauka CEO Alan Johnson serves as chairman of the Hawaii Substance Abuse Coalition. The rehab also employs a certified substance abuse program administrator, a Master’s-level psychologist, a medical director/psychiatrist and many CSACs. All three facilities combined have approximately 130 staff members including part-time counselors, interns, volunteers and teaching assistants (for the TEEN care program). In addition, it has contracts for on-site services with several outside medical facilities, mental health agencies, and psychologists. At the residential facility, the staff-to-client ratio is approximately two-to-one.

Extras

Hina Mauka has a peer mentoring program to help with the transition from treatment back to society. Volunteers from the local community meet with program participants to encourage hope and self-confidence. They also set an example of the life skills and attitudes needed for clients to succeed in their recovery and personal lives. Meetings take place outside treatment and occur once a week for six months. This program is voluntary and available to clients at any level of care.

Hina Mauka makes the most of its fantastic location by providing a plethora of recreational therapy activities including beach outings, trips to nearby Waimea Falls, yoga, Tai Chi and Zumba. Art therapy and music therapy are also provided.

Aftercare is available for up to 12 weeks following discharge from any treatment program. Group sessions take place once a week for 90 minutes. Aftercare aims to provide a smooth transition from  intensive treatment to an ongoing healthy life.

Hina Mauka’s Teen CARE program provides school- and community-based substance abuse outpatient and prevention services for adolescents.

In Summary

Hina Mauka is a well-respected rehab with a long history and an intimate, nurturing environment in a gorgeous tropical setting. Those seeking recovery in paradise at an affordable price need look no further.
