Heritage Behavioral HealthHeritage Behavioral Health Review

Heritage Behavioral Health has been treating men and women struggling with mental illness and chemical dependency in Macon County, Illinois since 1956. Clients seeking the residential substance abuse program at this non-profit must be over 18 and meet American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria. A comprehensive community-based facility, Heritage Behavioral Health also offers outpatient programming to adults and adolescents not in need of 24-hour supervision.

Accommodations and Food

The five-story Heritage building is on Main Street in downtown Decatur, over two hours south of Chicago and two hours north of St. Louis. A variety of addiction services operate out of this location—detox, methadone maintenance, comprehensive prevention services and both the outpatient and inpatient programs. There are 20 residential beds for adult men and women struggling with substance abuse. Facilities are dormitory style with shared rooms and bathrooms. Residents are provided with three cafeteria-style meals a day and are responsible for laundry and clean up.

Treatment and Staff

Heritage Behavioral Health offers on-site detoxification services 24 hours a day. Medications are administered as needed to facilitate clients safe withdrawal. Following detox, clients may choose to stay in the 28-day residential treatment facility, after which they are encouraged by the staff to transition to the outpatient program. Medical professionals and licensed counselors who specialize in dual diagnosis are the locus of the Heritage program, assisted by an extensive network of volunteers.

Heritage does not indoctrinate its clients with a specific philosophy (12-step or otherwise), instead educating clients about their addictions and encouraging discussions on how to pick up the pieces of their lives. Residential clients attend at least 25 hours of therapy a week, a combination of individual and group. Heritage does not have the resources to offer extensive individual therapy; so most processing is done in a group setting. Clients discuss how to live in sobriety: managing responsibilities, repairing relationships with their families and finding employment. They learn social skills, tools for relapse prevention and how to maintain motivation towards recovery.

In the first stage of the outpatient program (level two), clients have nine to 24 hours of therapy a week, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Outpatient services operate between 8 am and 9 pm, so clients can balance therapy with outside obligations—work, family and school. Clients work with their counselors to decide when to scale down to outpatient level one, when clients have eight hours of therapy a week. In addition to the adult schedule, the adolescent outpatient program (for teens 12-17) includes family counseling and anger management work.

In Summary

Heritage Behavioral Health will suit clients with dual diagnoses who are looking for affordable care. It’s a seasoned treatment center with many resources, though these resources are spread somewhat thin: this is not the optimal place for a client seeking lots of individual attention. Clients willing to put in the work in group will benefit more from this program more than those who require more hand-holding.
