Heartview FoundationHeartview Foundation Review

Founded in 1964, Heartview Foundation is a private, non-profit substance abuse treatment facility in Bismarck, North Dakota. Heartview Foundation provides inpatient and outpatient care for those facing chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. Additionally, it provides a plethora of alcohol and drug education programs.

Accommodations and Food

At Heartview Foundation, the co-ed residential treatment program has a 11-bed capacity. Clients 18 years and older are paired in gender-specific rooms. The rooms have wooden floors and are furnished with twin bed and two nightstands with matching modern lamps. The beds have wooden headboards, and are covered with decorative comforters. Rooms are painted in calming pastel colors and large windows provide ample sunlight during the day.

The staff prepares breakfasts and lunches, while catered dinners are supplied, courtesy of the nearby Sanford Medical Center. Clients all eat together in a dining hall. Menu options include scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch. Dinners vary, depending on Sanford Medical Center’s menu.

Clients receive limited pay phone privileges and must limit calls to ten minutes. Should a phone call disturb a client, staff intervenes. Lights out is at 11 pm during the week, and at midnight on the weekends.

Treatment and Staff

Heartview Foundation’s addiction treatment uses an evidence-based approach, primarily CBT. Upon intake, residents receive a comprehensive assessment and, if necessary, psychological referrals and testing. Medication-assisted treatment, specifically Suboxone is provided to ease withdrawal from opiates. Staff closely monitors clients exhibiting mild or moderate withdrawals. Those with acute withdrawal symptoms, requiring comprehensive detox services are referred to a local hospital.

Treatment typically lasts seven weeks and consists of daily group therapy, medication management (if necessary), art therapy, yoga, exercise and attendance at 12-step meetings. Clients attend group from 8 am to noon, and from 1:15 to 3 pm Mondays through Thursdays. On Fridays, the group therapy schedule is from 8 am to noon. Group topics include anger management, personal growth, substance abuse education, mood disorders, spirituality and stress management. Dual diagnosis support is provided in individual therapy.

Clients attend off-site AA/NA meetings in the local community with transportation provided by staff. Additionally, there is a Big Book study on the premises at 9:15 pm on Fridays, as well as several other AA/NA meetings throughout the week.

Heartview Foundation offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), outpatient treatment and aftercare. IOP and PHP both include group and individual therapy and last for 20 sessions. The PHP track is from 8 am to noon, Mondays through Fridays and the IOP is from 5 to 8 pm Mondays through Thursdays. PHP and IOP treatment include educational lectures, medical monitoring (if necessary) and access to chaplain services. Group topics parallel those discussed in residential treatment. Aftercare includes one group therapy session per week, for a total of 20 sessions.

Staff includes seven Master’s-level LCSWs, a  psychiatrist who serves as medical director, 14 LADCs, nursing staff and administrative support.

Extras

Clients in the inpatient program have the option to participate in yoga twice a week as well as art therapy and acupuncture twice per month. Family visitation hours are from 1 to 4 pm on Sundays and a counselor schedules additional time on a case-by-case basis. The family program lasts for two days and is scheduled during the latter part of a client’s treatment. Additionally, Heartview Foundation offers a variety of events, including a PTSD support group and DUI seminars.

Heartview offers an innovative technology to bridge the barriers of weather, travel and scheduling difficulties that often get in the way of people accessing treatment in geographically isolated areas. Since 2010, they have used a private social network called Network Assisted Recovery (NAR), which offers exclusive access to recovery resources and support to clients, alumni and their family members.

Heartview Foundation’s new facility in Candu, North Dakota has a 16-bed capacity and will accommodate more clients requiring inpatient care.

In Summary

Heartview Foundation boasts a staff with impressive credentials, as well as a long history of helping those in need of substance abuse and addiction treatment services. While they are not cheap, they offer comprehensive services, as well as a 12-step approach for clients seeking a traditional approach in their recovery.
