Healthy Lifestyles The Chickasaw NationHealthy Lifestyles: The Chickasaw Nation Review

Certified by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, Healthy Lifestyles is a residential substance abuse program serving Native American adults. Based on the disease model of addiction, it was founded on 12-step ideology in 1995 in Ada, Oklahoma, the home of the headquarters for the Chickasaw Nation.

Accommodations and Food

Fourteen clients share double occupancy dormitory rooms in this single story treatment facility. Classrooms, dining hall and group meeting areas are all under one roof. The government of the Chickasaw Nation funds this institution; there are not a lot of extras. Clients get three squares a day, brought in from the local hospital cafeteria, and there is a television in the common room available during free time. Coffee and sugar are allowed, but no cigarettes—they offer tobacco cessation education instead.

Treatment and Staff

This is a 28-day treatment program for adult clients with a CDIB (Certificate Degree of Indian Blood) card from a federally recognized American Indian tribe. Each applicant receives an assessment and an individualized treatment plan. If detox is necessary, it can be arranged prior to admission.

Once in residence, clients are taught 12-step philosophy in a classroom setting. They work the steps, but they do not attend meetings. The curriculum also includes individual counseling once a week, family counseling, group therapy, experiential therapy, alcohol and drug education, HIV/AIDS education and fetal alcohol syndrome, child abuse and domestic violence education. In addition, GED classes are provided upon request.

There is also a limited wellness program built into the schedule, with time for exercise, access to free weights, nutritional counseling and the possibility of yoga at the facility.

The family program consists of group therapy and individual counseling on Tuesday nights and visitors hours from 1 to 4 pm on Saturdays.

There is one staff member for every client at Healthy Lifestyles. The treatment staff includes Native Americans who are licensed mental health professionals and CADCs.

In Summary

Healthy Lifestyles is a tribal government facility that theoretically understands the unique challenges of its own population. The immediate immersion in 12-step work is a proven foundation for success, but the lack of aftercare programming could be a problem. A lot of information is being hoisted upon individuals who are newly sober, so the question becomes how much they will retain without continued support.
