Hazel Pittman Center was founded in 1974 as a private, non-profit behavioral health organization. Located in rural Chester, South Carolina, just 60 miles north of Columbia, it aims to bring education, prevention and outpatient services to those suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues by offering intensive treatment through both group and individual therapy.

Treatment and Staff

Hazel Pittman Center looks like a traditional therapy facility, with a handful of group rooms, offices and lecture halls. All of the outpatient programs are small, serving between 10 and 15 clients at a time. While meals are not provided in any of programs, clients are welcome to bring snacks from home. Cigarettes are banned from the property.

Clients refer themselves to this program or are referred by a physician, the courts or other agencies. Initially, they must undergo an assessment to determine the appropriate program for them. Unique needs, stress triggers, strengths, abilities and preferences are all taken into account during this process; information about past relationships, education, vocational history and other important facts are also considered. Once this process is completed, a counselor gives the client a diagnosis and recommendation for placement.

Each outpatient plan is tailored to suit the client’s needs. Intensive Outpatient (IOP) typically runs four times a week from 9 to 11:30 am and includes group counseling, education and individual therapy for $100 per day. Groups focus on education, life skills, trauma, anger management and relapse prevention. As clients gain traction in recovery, they begin to shorten their weeks. Once IOP is completed, the client can enter into the outpatient program, which runs once a week and costs $65 per day. This service is similar to the IOP, except it does not offer individual therapy;the focus is on group work instead.

Each week, several AA/NA meetings happen on-site. Through the 12 steps, clients can gain access to recovery tools and a supportive community. Attendance at these meetings is not required.

Once a week, Hazel Pittman Center hosts a family night when clients and family members can participate in group therapy, where they learn to communicate as well as gain insight into the disease of addiction.

Hazel Pittman Center requires all treatment staff to be Master’s-level certified in a counseling-related field. In addition, all clinical staff are required to become certified as addiction counselors at the state or national level.

In Summary

Hazel Pittman Center offers a variety of therapy-based, outpatient services. While many programs feature set schedules, this facility allows the individual to create a tailored program that suits their personal goals.
