Hawaii Island RecoveryHawaii Island Recovery Review

Hawaii Island Recovery is a dual diagnosis addiction treatment center specializing in the treatment of substance abuse, behavioral addictions, chronic pain and co-occurring mental health disorders. The program is as rigorous as the facility is beautiful; clients participate in 12-step meetings and engage in an intensive combination of therapeutic modalities, including CBT, EMDR, and experiential therapy.

Accommodations and Food

Hawaii Island Recovery campus is on Kailua-Kona (the Big Island), a quarter mile from the water. This luxurious facility can accommodate up to eight residents at a time. Male and female clients share a house, and meet for group and therapy in a separate office. The house itself is more than 5,000 square feet and elegantly furnished. Private rooms with fluffy double beds are available. The living room has leather couches and a TV, and the wide porch offers beautiful, verdant views. Residents also have the option of lounging around the L-shaped sparkling pool in the backyard.

A fully equipped kitchen is available for clients to prepare their own breakfast and a private chef prepares lunch and dinner for the house.

Treatment and Staff

Hawaii Island Recovery offers medical detox and residential rehabilitation programs for 30, 60, and 90 days. Providing evidence-based treatment and holistic and experiential therapies, Hawaii Island Recovery combines effective treatment modalities to support long-term sobriety. With a low client-to-staff ratio, they offer individualized care provided by a professional staff in a supervised environment. After an initial evaluation, each client follows an individually tailored treatment plan which includes some combination of EMDR and CBT to help process past trauma. Programming is geared toward dual diagnosis clients and all Hawaii Island Recovery therapists are of a Master’s level of education.

Monday through Friday, the morning begins before 6 am. Clients tidy their rooms after they get dressed and they are shepherded to the first 12-step meeting of the day. Clients make breakfast when they return to campus and have free time before leaving for the office for group therapy. Three times a week, group meets for two hours before lunch. This might be a group where clients check in and process interpersonal challenges, a psycho-educational group to discuss issues around living sober, expressive therapy, or animal-assisted therapy. Twice a week, when clients arrive at the office they have individual therapy.

After lunch, clients have some kind of physical activity, which rotates between exercise at an off-site gym and having yoga, Reiki, acupuncture or massage at the house. Each client has a weekly appointment with a licensed personal trainer at the gym to outline fitness goals. Four days a week, clients have half an hour of supervised computer time. After dinner, staff takes the clients to a local AA or NA meeting. All residents are encouraged to find sponsors to start working with while in treatment. The rest of the evening is free until lights out at 11 pm.

Clients have a chance to catch up on sleep during the weekend. Saturday is a simple day: wake up for breakfast at 8 am and a daylong excursion, followed by movie night. Sunday is much the same, except that clients may have approved visitors from 1:30 to 5 pm.

Extras

Recreational activities and alternative therapies are integral to Hawaii Island Recovery’s treatment program and include access to an off-site gym, yoga, Reiki, acupuncture, massage, equine therapy, art therapy, experiential nature-based therapy; in a rainforest, a lava tube or on a remote beach. They also offer something called Dolphin-Assisted Psychotherapy. In addition, there’s hiking, snorkeling (with turtles!), night trips to the top of Mauna Kea and beach days.

In Summary

Hawaii Island Recovery provides evidence-based treatment in addition to experiential therapies in a tranquil and stimulating environment. The facility is uber-small, so clients with co-occurring disorders get the attention they need in such a comprehensive treatment program. Some alumni of the program now live locally and work for Hawaii Island Recovery, a testament both to the program’s efficacy and to the recovery community on the Big Island. In other words, the real danger of choosing Hawaii Island Recovery is that clients may not want to leave.
