Genesis Transitional Housing Ministries, Inc. Review
Genesis Transitional Housing Ministries, Inc. is a Christian-based, transitional home for recovering addicts, ex-offenders and homeless men and women. Located in St. Albans in Queens, New York, this program provides sober housing, mentoring, job training, education and parenting skills workshops. The founders, namely Minister Andre Broady and his wife Helen, started the facility 26 years ago after getting sober themselves. The philosophy at Genesis is that recovery is possible when faith is integrated into a positive lifestyle.
Accommodations and Amenities
Genesis is a private, two-family house that accommodates both male and female residents. The rooms are shared between two and four clients each, with twin-sized beds and small dressers. There are weights for the residents, as well as a community area where clients can gather and socialize. No pets are allowed in the facility, and smoking is permitted in the backyard area. For an additional $10 per week, residents may have basic meals provided by the facility cook.
Rules and Regulations
Residents are able to attend their own outside drug and alcohol treatment programs during the day if they wish. However, this is not required. Nearby AA/NA meetings are held at an outside facility and clients are highly encouraged to attend. Transportation is provided; clients are also encouraged to find jobs or go to school.
While at Genesis, each resident receives faith-based counseling along with faith study and workshops on how to avoid conflict. Counselors and caseworkers are on staff to provide help clients in early recovery. Church is held on Sundays, although clients are not required to attend.
During the first month, residents work on sobriety goal plans with a counselor. Clients focus on healthy community integration, values and building relationships. This mentor-like relationship features weekly check in to make sure clients are staying on track. The counselor can also provide assistance finding employment or an education program. This sober living can last up to a year, however no specific length of time is required.

Genesis Transitional Housing Ministries, Inc. is an affordable sober living for men and women. Using a faith-based approach to recovery, clients are immersed in Christianity with counseling and optional 12-step meetings to supplement—as well as assistance finding employment. Though it may not be a fit for the non-religious, this long-term program is great for those open to a religious path to sobriety.
