Genesis House Inc. Review
Genesis House Inc. was founded in May of 1972. The organization runs four facilities all located adjacent to each other in a mixed lower income neighborhood in the semi-rural outskirts of the city of Vallejo, California. One facility focuses on sober living, while the other three provide extensive residential substance abuse treatment. Genesis House breaks its treatment into four categories: evaluations, responsibilities, requirements and activities.
Accommodations and Food
The Genesis House residential treatment facilities have been converted from family homes. Each of them provides about 10 beds each for a total of 31 between them, two to three clients per room. The Genesis House staff pride themselves on residential facilities being self-sufficient communities—clients do all cooking and house cleaning.
Treatment and Staff
Clients may enter a Genesis House location as a condition of parole or probation or may come in of their own volition. Residential treatment at Genesis House runs an extensive nine to 11 months and consists of three phases, each a minimum of 90 days. Each phase has its corresponding requirements.
Requirements have to do with the focus of group therapy. In Phase One, the emphasis is on “telling one’s story.” Clients are helped through self-disclosure and acknowledgement of the events that led to their admission. Phase Two focuses on clarifying social and psychological problems, exploring new coping behaviors and strategies. Phase Three aids clients in practicing their strategies successfully and provides opportunities for increased responsibility, thus establishing a consistent pattern of new behaviors. Evaluations occur at the end of each phase. During evaluations, committees made up of peers and staff help determine where an individual should be in the phase progression of the program. As they progress through treatment and more people join the group, clients move from basic household tasks to more significant (often better) ones—say, dish washer to cook.
Treatment includes a range of gestalt therapy, psychodrama, role playing, feedback groups, therapy (short-term solution-focused psychotherapy), 12-step meetings, recreation and physical exercise, as well as family outings. Last but not least, the individualized treatment plans that clients co-create with their assigned counselors address drug choice, medical problems, legal matters, family issues, psycho-social problem areas, vocational and educational needs.
Genesis House staff consists of an executive director, a clinical director, a fiscal officer, an administrative secretary, a job coordinator and six counselors who are available 24 hours a day to counsel clients and facilitate groups. Each counselor has a caseload of three to five clients at a time.
