The Gate House was first founded in 1972. Located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, it is a non-profit organization that provides residential and outpatient drug and alcohol treatment services. Originally established as a halfway house for male alcoholics, Gate House admitted its first female resident on April 14, 1989, thus instigating the split of the Gate House into separate facilities for men and women. The Gate House organization provides referrals, outpatient services, personalized intervention services and recovery residences, while Gate House for Women specifically provides residential extended care for women who have already completed a primary detox elsewhere. The average length of stay at the Gate House For Women is three to six months.

Accommodations and Food

The Gate House For Women has 24 beds; an average of 20 clients resides at the facility at any given time. The beds are for the most part grouped two to three per room. As they progress through treatment, clients move up in seniority and can eventually be moved to one of the seven single bedrooms. For recreation, Gate House focuses on activities that keep the clients interacting, such as bonding and sharing in the expansive common rooms. TV is typically watched on weekends. Clients do household chores cook all their own meals.

Treatment and Staff

The Gate House For Women residential program offers individualized treatment. Clients receive individual, group and family counseling corresponding to their needs. There are also daily peer groups as well as daily off-site 12-step meetings. Clients can take advantage of vocational counseling and employment readiness classes and have access to life skills education classes focused on budgeting, conflict resolution, health and wellness, healthy relationships, interpersonal communications, nutritional meal planning and preparation, parenting and self-esteem workshops.

Treatment at the Gate House is broken down into three phases. During Phase I, residents become acclimated with the Gate House guidelines and routines and begin individual and group therapy sessions while taking part in community building activities. Once a client has met her initial treatment goals, she moves into Phase II during which she seeks employment or volunteer work. During Phase III, residents plan for the future; the discharge planning at this stage includes relapse prevention groups and outpatient services as well as the Gate House support network which offers post-treatment assistance with transitional housing, a weekly aftercare group and an alumni association. The relapse prevention planning takes place in-house, while the rest of the services are available once clients have left residential treatment.

The Gate House for Women always has their program director and two to three counselors on location.

Extras

Gate House also manages several gender-divided recovery residences in Lancaster County where residents may stay for up to one year while working toward independent living. Residents participate in house meetings and perform household chores as part of a community living environment and learn to navigate early recovery with the help of their live-in peers and a 12-step recovery program.

Finally, the Gate House offers a family program of bi-weekly family group meetings. Individual family sessions may also be arranged with the primary counselor. There is even teleconferencing offered for families that are unable to travel.

In Summary

The Gate House organization has a long history and some very well structured and effective recovery resources in place. It could be argued that the gender specificity of the Gate House For Women is what allows it to function as harmoniously as it seems to do. The Gate House claims an extremely high success rate. With an array of services, a strong mission statement and reasonable costs, The Gate House For Women offers a door to recovery well worth a knock.
