Gastineau Human Services Review

Gastineau Human Services is a nonprofit behavioral health facility located in a quiet business district of Juneau, Alaska. Since 1965, GHS has offered outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) to adults that include drug and alcohol assessments, individual therapy and gender- and culture-specific therapy groups.

Treatment and Staff

GHS’s treatment services use a CBT approach and are not 12-step oriented. In addition to offering services to the general public, they assist those who are dealing with the court system. Dual diagnosis support may be offered, but no detox services are provided. Those who need detox or inpatient services are offered referrals to another facility.

Based on an initial assessment, counselors design an individualized treatment schedule for each client. The minimum commitment to GHS is 12 weeks, during which clients have individual therapy at least once a week and attend 90 minutes of group therapy daily, excluding weekends. Men- and women-only groups focus on addiction issues that are specific to gender. GHS also runs groups geared toward assisting members of the Native American Indian tribes of Alaska with substance abuse issues, while respecting their cultural traditions. There is a relapse prevention group that focuses on how to maintain sobriety after completion of the program and clients are welcome to return to this group at GHS, free of charge, when they need the support.

The staff consists of six certified chemical dependency counselors who run the therapy sessions as well as one employment counselor who assists clients with vocational matters.

Extras

GHS also provides transitional housing to assist the homeless population of Juneau in getting off of the streets. The GHS community corrections program provides outpatient substance abuse treatment and employment and long-term housing services to formerly incarcerated adults referred by the state Department of Corrections to facilitate their reintegration into mainstream society.

In Summary

Gastineau Human Services offers a small, but effective array of affordable services that are dedicated to helping the unique Juneau community. The gender- and culture-specific groups have been designed with this population in mind. The services are provided at a sliding scale fee, dependent on income. With the possibility of getting up to a 90 percent discount on services, anyone in the Juneau area who wants treatment can afford it.
