Freedom Recovery CentreFreedom Recovery Centre Review

Founded in 2004, Freedom Recovery Centre in Cartford, London has helped guide more than 500 men and women on their sober journeys utilizing the 12 steps, peer support and extended care programming.

Accommodations and Food

Two Victorian era houses comprise the inpatient facility; both are located in a residential area in the southeast of London. Five residents are in one house and four in the other. Freedom Recovery Center believes that shared rooms offer support at a time when clients are most vulnerable; though single rooms may be had upon availability and expressed preference. Clients are responsible for household chores, laundry and meal preparation. Nearby meeting rooms are utilized for meetings and aftercare.

Treatment and Staff

The treatment period at Freedom Recovery Centre typically last for six to 24 weeks. This is not a medical program—there is no detox offered here and 12-step is the chosen therapeutic modality. Clients work the first three steps in two meetings each day in the early stages of residence.

Care planning, accommodation, group therapy, weekly individual therapy, peer support, aftercare, and family support form the comprehensive and integrated approach to recovery. The Freedom Center program provides support around dual diagnosis, sexual trauma, emotional and physical abuse and difficult family relationships. Group therapy is a big part of the program. Attendance at all groups is mandatory.

Each resident is assigned a counselor to identify short and long-term goals, help focus, and identify small achievable goals over a set time. Five full-time employees provide a client-to-staff ratio of two-to-one. Counselors are members of the British Association for Counseling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Staff is on site Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, but there is someone available by phone 24/7.

The weekday schedule runs from 9:30 am to 5 pm and includes daily reflection, culinary skills and shared lunch, therapeutic duties, wind down/meditation and counseling. Gender groups, therapeutic themes, life story assignments, life skills, nutritional meal planning and budgeting, weekly house shopping and AA/NA/CA fellowship meetings occur on specific days.

Family Day is arranged on a per client basis. The goal is to support family integration, enabling family members to participate in group discussions, share experiences and work towards possible change for the future. In addition, visitors are allowed between 5 and 10 pm from Monday to Friday and weekends from 10 am to 10 pm.

Extras

Freedom Recovery Centre offers its clients Reiki healing as an extra. Other activities include gym access and group outings (noodle bar, fun days, community activities, etc.)

In Summary

Freedom Recovery Centre understands that clients will have already made difficult decisions and followed them through before arriving—like getting physically sober. The role of the Centre and its commitment to residents is to support and build on the previous hard work, and establish a solid foundation from which to maintain a life free of drugs or alcohol.

This is the UK, meaning publicly funded healthcare, so Freedom accepts referrals for Housing Benefit as payment for accommodation when the client is eligible and all documentation is in place prior to admission—in addition to private clients.
