Accommodations and Food
All activities revolve around the main facility, which is an apartment house with shared rooms. There are up to five men in a room, though there are a few two- to three-person rooms as well, with room for 24 total. Rooms are twin beds and each client gets a dresser for their personal items. Bathrooms are shared. There is a cook on staff who provides three meals a day for clients, in the kitchen area of the house.
Treatment and Staff
Fred Brown Recovery follows a four-phase program over a suggested 90-day program. During the first phase of the program, clients are given a mental and physical health evaluation. What follows is a familiarization with group therapy concepts and the disease concept of addiction. In the second phase, clients get down to the day-in-day-out mechanics of recovery, with frequent therapy and 12-step meetings. Family involvement is also encouraged during this phase. Phase three features a focus on building self-esteem and potential vocational opportunities and the final phase is dedicated to implementing the aftercare program, which includes individual therapy and weekly relapse prevention, anger management workshops and alumni meetings.
The average starts with a 7 am wake up and breakfast, followed by meditation. Clients then must complete their housekeeping duties for the week and head off to their primary group counseling until lunch. In the afternoon, there is a variety of meetings, including anger management class, relapse prevention and job training courses. After dinner there is a 12-step and final group meeting before lights out at 11pm. Families are encouraged to participate in the Thursday evening Family Program and Alanon meetings.
There are no outside excursions organized beyond attending 12-step meetings in the community, weekly trips to the local park or to a nearby store for snacks. There are also limited opportunities to make it to an off-site gym so most of the men lift weights on their own time.
While a medical detox is not offered, incoming clients can be advised on options in the area. Similarly, there is no doctor or psychiatrist on staff but Fred Brown will organize visits with a local healthcare provider for those in need. The staff consists of therapists and licensed counselors, as well as administrators and house managers. There is a housekeeper who maintains the facility.

The staff of Fred Brown offers professional interventions, when needed. The treatment team assesses individual needs and circumstances to determine if an intervention is beneficial and appropriate, they will then outline options for the family such as the structure of the intervention, type of treatment, medical issues, insurance coverage and payment options.

Fred Brown Recovery is basic 12-step based, therapeutic care with a highly organized daily schedule and a nod to dual diagnosis disorders. And it’s important to remember that with 28 years of service, there is a certain standard of results offered. At Fred Brown, discipline and the work of recovery are not only stressed, they are the program itself.
