The Fellowship CenterThe Fellowship Center Review

Founded in 1963, the The Fellowship Center offers residential drug and alcohol treatment for men in Escondido, California, a pretty suburb of San Diego. Treatment at the facility includes evidence-based practices, as well as 12-step involvement. Dual diagnosis can be addressed in counseling sessions, but those needing psychiatric treatment must go off-site.

Accommodations and Food

There are four different buildings at The Fellowship Center that house residents and the facility has a total of 100 beds. Room size and number of beds depends on what building the clients stay in. Those who choose private pay are typically housed in double-occupancy rooms with single beds and those who use insurance may be in either a double or triple occupancy room. Some men receive county funding to stay at the facility for free and these clients stay in large rooms with up to five roommates, some of whom sleep in bunk beds.

All clients share bathrooms which are located down the hallway of each floor. There are multiple group and community rooms, as well as living room for the men to relax and work on their recovery assignments.

Food is prepared on-site and served in a cafeteria. The menu is eclectic and includes a hot breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Cereal, fruit, vegetarian options and a salad bar are available as well. Dietary requests can be accommodated for medical purposes and allergies only.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at The Fellowship Center is very structured and clients are expected to commit to a three to four month stay. Upon arrival, an assessment is given and an individualized treatment plan is designed for each client, all of which consist of some mixture of group counseling and individual therapyDetox is not offered.

Residential treatment is broken up into three phases. The first phase includes one month of groups, which are centered mostly on Motivational Interviewing (MI), as well as 12-step participation, with a specific set of workbooks which are provided. The second phase also lasts one month but requires clients to attend outside 12-step meetings, a search for employment and participate in groups focused on relapse prevention, coping skills and processing. A different workbook provided for this stage and clients are required to complete all assignments in order to move forward. The final phase lasts 30 to 60 days and is designed to be transitional; helping clients reintegrate back into society.

There are 14 staff member on-site at The Fellowship, all of which are LADCs.

In Summary

For men struggling with alcohol and drug addiction who are looking for an highly structured, affordable residential program, The Fellowship Center may be a good choice. The facility accepts private pay, insurance and also offers free county beds for those who qualify. The program uses therapy, 12-step and written assignments to help men recover and get back on track.
