Epic Behavioral Healthcare Review
Since 1973, Epic Behavioral Healthcare in historic St. Augustine, Florida, has provided adolescent and adult clients with outpatient and inpatient substance abuse treatment. The residential rehab unit is housed in the Epic Recovery Center, which is located in a separate building from the outpatient facility.
Accommodations and Food
In the 16-bed residential facility, everything is focused on education and recovery. Double-occupancy rooms have a bed and dresser for each resident and the communal bathroom is shared by everyone.
Though personal computers and cell phones are permitted, they must be stored in a closet of personal belongings and use is closely monitored. TV is allowed one hour each evening and residents can use the on-site gym.
The three meals a day are filling comfort foods: eggs, bacon or sausage, toast, juice and coffee for breakfast; seafood, a side dish, vegetables, a dessert, coffee and sweet tea for lunch; and something similar for dinner but with a meat rather than seafood. Sugar and caffeine are allowed.
Treatment and Staff
Clinicians use a range of techniques with the primary one being Motivational Interviewing (MI). CBT and relapse prevention are also used. Clients (inpatient and outpatient) have individual therapy once a week in addition to weekly group sessions that last for an hour and tackle subjects such as drug education and how substance abuse affects physical, emotional and mental health
Adults and adolescents also take part in AA and NA meetings. Dual diagnosis services are available for clients with co-occurring disorders.
A typical day for residents starts with 6 am wake-up, followed by breakfast and a community meeting. Then residents go to the first group session of the day. An AA meeting follows, after which clients do yoga. After lunch, there’s another group session before dinner. Free time is scheduled for one hour in between dinner and lights out at 10 pm.
Staff member credentials include LCSW and LMHC. Adolescents work with female clinicians, while adults work with male and female staff. Medical and clinical staff are available 24/7.
Extras
Aftercare consists of both group and individual sessions. These sessions are free for alumni.
The families of clients may take part in family counseling to further their understanding of substance abuse.
Adults who can’t leave home may have “e-therapy” with a therapist via video conferencing, and staff members are available to transport residents to off-site AA meetings.
In Summary
For serious, (almost) no-frills recovery, Epic Recovery Healthcare offers adults and adolescents substance abuse treatment with an emphasis on MI, CBT and other evidence-based techniques. Though fun-filled activities are scarce here, recovery is top on the agenda. A good, solid choice for Floridians who mean business.
