Endeavor Place Review
About halfway between Fargo and Minneapolis, in the tiny rural town of Verndale, Minnesota, Endeavor Place is a residential facility for chemical dependency treatment specifically geared toward male adolescents ages 14 to 19. Clients are assisted in working through their issues through daily group and individual therapy. The treatment at Endeavor Place addresses the physical, mental and social aspects of recovery with a special focus on recreation therapy.
Accommodations and Food
Endeavor Place provides simple, homey lodgings in a house built in 2000. The accommodations consist of a living room, three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a study room and a large kitchen that doubles as the dining room. There is one comfortable meeting room, in addition to the on-site staff offices. The real draw is that Endeavor Place is located on five acres of serene natural surroundings that facilitate a positive environment for residents and provide ample space for the recreational activities.
Treatment and Staff
Endeavor Place offers an intensive treatment experience that begins with an individualized treatment for each client. Therapeutic methods address each person’s unique physical, mental and social aspects of recovery. Treatment plans are reviewed often and case workers and families are informed of treatment planning and progress on a weekly basis.
As part of the treatment method, Endeavor Place uses CBT and DBT in group and individual settings. Individual counseling takes place for a minimum of 30 minutes per daily session. A counselor helps each resident to focus on issues identified in the individual treatment plan. At least 15 hours of group therapy are provided per week. Honest, constructive confrontations and self-disclosure are encouraged in the groups, which address topics such as effective communication, assertiveness, self-esteem, anger management and relapse.
Relapse prevention check-ins are done with each resident on a weekly basis and a living skills program teaches basic skills necessary for independent living—such as food management, housekeeping, personal appearance and hygiene, money management and health care awareness.
Clients also attend a minimum of four outside AA or NA meetings weekly. Family members can participate in the family day every first and third Thursday of the month.
The three-person staff is small but dedicated, consisting of experienced and licensed addiction counselors. There is no medical doctor on-site.
Extras
Endeavor Place holds peer groups where residents can discuss their issues among themselves. Spiritual support is offered and involves church attendance and AA or NA meetings. Other services include vocational assessment and job readiness. Residents keep up their academics by taking on-line classes in a private classroom at a local high school and also earn extra school credit through the activities they complete in the program.
Structured recreation activity has a big role at Endeavor Place. Sports, hiking, bocce, ladder golf, skiing and snowboarding, a ropes course and various community outings take place seven days a week. Residents work on cooperation with other residents, how to interact with their peers and learning how to have fun in healthy ways. A great example of Endeavor Place’s special interest in recreation as therapy is their on-site weight room. The 600-square-foot facility was remodeled and completed by residents in 2007 with the assistance of a professional carpenter and has provided residents with an exercise outlet ever since.
Endeavor Place encourages residents to do community service and volunteer work to aid in their recovery and even provides pet therapy. The resident pets, a black lab named Angel and Mousey, the cat, are available 24 hours a day to provide comfort to residents.
