Elmhurst HomeElmhurst Home Review

Located in Detroit’s Highland Park enclave, Elmhurst Home has been serving the community since 1970. It was founded by local recovery figures James and Naomi Oden, who wanted to help those who were down on their luck. Today it is a thriving non-profit run by the founders’ son, James Oden, who serves as executive director. The multi-campus treatment centers include the males-only Elmhurst Home residential facility and Naomi’s Nest, the sister facility for women. Both offer inpatient programs for individuals over 18 years old, in short-term (14 to 30 days) and long-term (90 days) tracks.

Accommodations and Food

Elmhurst Home for men is a huge brick structure where residents live with up to five other roommates in bunk bed-equipped dormitories. The facilities are simple, but very well maintained. The women’s facility, Naomi’s Nest, is located a few miles away in a converted office space. Women share rooms and bathrooms with several other residents. Naomi’s Nest also offers a childcare center for residents participating in the mothers and children program.

Meals provided at both facilities are of high quality and nutritional value. The menu is created and executed under the supervision of a registered dietician with a specialty in nutritional therapy.

Treatment and Staff

In order to be treated at either of the Elmhurst Home facilities, clients must receive a referral from Detroit Wayne County Mental Health Authority, a parole or probation agent or the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. Residents of Elmhurst Home and Naomi’s Nest take part in daily group therapy and addiction education, and get weekly individual counseling and separate family education groups, all using the CBT model. Clients are also educated about relapse prevention and anger management skills. There is a heavy emphasis on 12-step recovery and the weekly schedule includes both on- and off-site AA and NA meetings. There are also dual diagnosis programs available.

In addition to Elmhurst Home’s standard residential program options, Naomi’s Nest provides gender-specific treatment and other therapeutic offerings specifically for women. The goal is to address relationships, sexual and physical abuse, parenting and childcare. Naomi’s Nest also specializes in helping women to retain custody of their children, in conjunction with social workers.

Elmhurst Home puts a special emphasis on providing aftercare to those transitioning out of the residential program by offering continuing outpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) services. The outpatient/aftercare program meets once a week for two hours and IOP meets three times a week for two hours.

The staff averages about seven members per facility, at a ratio of one staff member to 17 clients. There is no medical doctor on site.

Extras

The Elmhurst Home programs provide a range of additional programs and activities. One of the most interesting is their role play program, taught by a licensed counselor once a week at each facility. Other services include employment and housing assistance for residents, computer skills education and a certified GED literacy program.

Elmhurst Home also encourages clients to take part in either on- or off-site community service, such as urban farming. Social skills development, parenting classes, HIV and STD testing and education, work therapy and transitional care are offered at both of the residential facilities. The women of Naomi’s Nest also have access to yoga classes.

In Summary

Having been around since 1970, the Elmhurst Home has proven its value to the Metro Detroit community. It offers 12 step-based recovery services to all those who are referred, for free or at a very reasonable cost. No one is turned away from Elmhurst Home for lack of insurance or personal funds.
