EatonEaton Canyon Treatment Center Review

Eaton Canyon Treatment Center in Pasadena, California—one of the 200 largest cities in the US—is a residential facility for adult men and women looking for a safe-haven for treatment of alcohol and substance abuse. Established in 2001, Eaton provides confidential luxury treatment in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Accommodations and Food

Eaton is a gated post-detox tri-level estate where guests enjoy an all-encompassing view of the city and its surrounding mountainous wilderness. Inside, residents have use of multiple common areas; a chandelier hangs from a vaulted beamed ceiling over a lounge with comfortable arm chairs, leather sofas and a widescreen TV. On cool desert evenings, clients can enjoy a fireside chat in another sunken den.

This six-bed luxury facility has one double occupancy bedroom and the remaining five are private—all are furnished with king-sized beds. Private rooms cost extra and have either en-suite ($25,000) or shared bathrooms ($15,000) and are furnished with a large dresser, night stand and a spacious closet. The master bedroom not only has its own bathroom, but a fully equipped kitchen with marble counters, wooden cabinets and track lighting.

During meals, clients enjoy a communal dining area. Food is prepared in Eaton’s restaurant-grade kitchen with an industrial oven and stainless-steel refrigeration unit. A five-star chef creates entrees designed to meet each client’s needs. Residents choose from a menu composed of meat and vegetarian options, with diabetic or special dishes prepared upon request—no order is too complicated. Menu items include scrambled eggs, French toast, vegetarian omelets and more. Coffee is served once a day—caffeine is limited. Sugar is permitted, as residents often bring outside snacks.

Treatment and Staff

Eaton provides focused treatment tracks for those recovering from alcohol addiction, prescription drug abuse, methamphetamine and cocaine addiction, benzodiazapine addiction and opiate addiction. Typically this program is 30 days, but some clients require more time—some staying for 60 days or longer. While individualized treatment plans are created to meet clients’ needs, Eaton incorporates a 12-step approach in conjunction with CBT for everyone. This includes both individual and group therapy that addresses topics like anger management and relapse prevention. Clients receive at least two one-on-one sessions per week. They are transported to mandatory off-site AA/NA meetings two to three times a week, and clients are required to work with a sponsor. Eaton Canyon offers AA discussion panels (in lieu of on-site meetings) and the local sober community is welcome to attend.

Outside electronics are limited to iPods and iPads. If a client is currently employed and requires use of a laptops or computer, they are permitted strictly for these purposes and access to these devices are always supervised occuring at designated times. While mobile phones are not allowed, residents are given access to phones in the evenings between 4 and 7 pm, with call lengths limited to ten minutes. Visitation occurs on Sundays between 1 and 4 pm.

In addition to an on-staff medical doctor, Eaton has a psychiatrist and because most clients have co-occurring disorders, dual diagnosis support is available. Eaton Canyon employs both men and women professionals including a MFT addiction specialist as well as CADCs.

Extras

While Eaton Canyon does not offer detox, it does coordinate with local hospitals in order to arrange for pre-treatment services. In addition to the residential component, Eaton also offers a six month aftercare program. This includes weekly group sessions and individual therapy once a month.

In terms of a family program, Eaton uses resources such as phones and internet to accommodate long-distance situations. Local families are welcome every two weeks to seek group therapy. These sessions entail separate sessions with the client followed by group session with their loved ones.

The bright workout room is equipped with a treadmill, elliptical machine, stationary bike, free weights, and therapy balls. The recreation room has a pool table and another small leisure room has a piano, barstool chairs and an additional TV. For educational purposes, another large den is set up lecture-hall style for classes and meetings.

Extra-curricular off-site activities include golfing, trips to LA County’s Arboretum & Botanical Gardens or the local library. For those interested, a yoga instructor is available for on-site classes. Alternative therapies available include art and music.

In Summary

Eaton Canyon’s staff are actively involved with their client’s recovery program, priding themselves on working closely with residents and keeping focus on recovery. More, if clients really work their program but are unsuccessful, the director will provide a full refund. Ultimately, this beautiful Southern California setting combined with a dedicated staff provides a structured and solid approach to getting sober.
