Eastman HouseEastman House Review

Established in 1971 as one of the first adolescent treatment programs in the country, Rhode Island’s Caritas has expanded to include residential and outpatient treatment for adults and teenagers in several locations throughout the state. Their Pawtucket location, known as Eastman House, provides residential treatment for adult women 18 years and older.

Accommodations and Food

Eastman House can accommodate 18 clients at a time, though it typically hosts no more than 16. Each room is shared between four women with twin beds and basic furnishings. Most of the rooms have an en suite bathroom, though one is situated next to a hallway bathroom. There’s no chef or culinary team to speak of at Eastman House and, as a result, residents take turns cooking for the house. This is typical of life at Eastman House, as residents are expected to complete a variety of different chores during their stay. Groceries are purchased during weekly shopping trips.

Treatment and Staff

The recommended stay at Eastman House is 90 days, but clients are able to participate in 30- and 60-day programs as well. Life at the facility is simple yet highly regulated, with a treatment philosophy based on the 12 steps. Residents attend two to three clinical group sessions a day, with individual therapy mixed in. In the evenings, they attend 12-step meetings, almost always at the facility itself. There is no medical detox available at Eastman House, so clients are required to take care of this process before they arrive.

A psychiatrist on staff performs pre-admission medical evaluations, though he does not provide psychiatric counseling during a client’s stay at Eastman House. If residents need to make medical or psychiatric appointments, Eastman House’s staff can help them do so.

Eastman House’s staff consists primarily of licensed drug and alcohol counselors.

Caritas also operates an inpatient facility for adolescent girls in Cranston and one for adolescent boys in Wyoming.

Extras

Caritas’ aftercare program is strictly for the adolescent facilities. While it still offers basic services for women graduating from Eastman House, it is not a specific component of their program.

There is no gym equipment available on-site, though Eastman House does offer trips to a local gym twice a week. Eastman House also tries to organize off-site trips for clients at least once a month, which may be a trip downtown or to a local movie theater.

In Summary

With a history of treating adolescents, Caritas remains geared toward servicing young people struggling with addiction. For adult women, Eastman House offers long-term care, with a low client load and a reasonable cost. The program is somewhat bare bones but is also highly structured and dedicated to instilling a work ethic and a 12-step foundation for recovery. Eastman House is definitely worth considering for women seeking residential care in Rhode Island.
