Youth Care of Utah Review
With over 24 years of experience, Youth Care of Utah in Draper, Utah is a part of the CRC Health Group, and provides intensive therapy in an intimate setting for adolescents ages 11 to 18. A bonus is that it keeps its numbers low with no more than 14 residents at a time.
Accommodations and Food
The average length of stay at Youth Care is 115 days, but many have stayed as long as a year-and-a-half. As a result of these longer terms, Youth Care makes every effort to keep the campus feeling like home with a total of three housing facilities on the grounds, all resembling college dormitories. There are 14 to 15 residents on-site at a time, with classrooms and living quarters in each facility. Clients share rooms with one or two other roommates, and each room has twin beds and its own bathroom; fortunately everything that been recently renovated, and the facilities now also include a new computer lab, a soccer field and basketball courts.
Treatment and Staff
There is no medical detox offered on-site at Youth Care of Utah; however, it does have a medical doctor, two psychiatrists and around-the-clock nursing staff. There are also EMTs available when necessary, as well as visits to off-site doctors. Many of the staff are Master’s- and PhD-level therapists, and they handle the daily therapy. Youth Care also employs substance abuse counselors. Clients who have met certain behavioral requirements can also attend off-site 12-step meetings.
Youth Care of Utah is a fully accredited school staffed with certified teachers, and much of the residents’ daily work is spent maintaining their studies with six hours of classes a day. Clients also attend group therapy three times a week, as well as three hours of individual therapy. There is a substance abuse counselor on staff who guides residents through the 12 steps and offers lessons in relapse prevention and positive coping skills. Students also attend AA meetings off-site twice a week. Families can schedule group therapy by appointment; as an added bonus, these sessions can be conducted over Skype.
Extras
Youth Care of Utah operates on a point system of behavior modification. Clients participate in a level system, wherein points are earned through positive behaviors such as performing well in school, having appropriate social interactions, maintaining a good attitude and generally complying with the rules. With enough points, residents progress through the system and receive extra privileges; in other words, their level affects how many off-site activities they can participate in, and can even determine visitation with parents.
There is an activity director on staff who runs all recreational activities (which are a major focus on the weekends). Once clients meet certain behavioral requirements, they’re allowed to go on off-site excursions like trips to the local museum, aquarium or movie theater. For more outdoorsy fun, residents can also be taken snowshoeing.
In Summary
Those who are have the willingness to change should consider this program. It makes room to include those who come to their facilities for a variety of traumas, from self-injurious behavior to physical and sexual abuse. However, for those seeking help primarily for addiction, Youth Care’s diverse program may not feel like the right fit—those clients would likely do better seeking out a more strictly 12-step based program.
