The Dimock Center Review
The Dimock Center aims to provide affordable, high quality behavioral health services to those suffering from substance abuse, mental illness, developmental delay and violence issues. Located in the Roxbury section of Boston, it serves clients from a variety of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. While many rehabs treat only one age group, this large facility treats children, adolescents and adults. In addition to the behavioral health services, it offers health maintenance, screenings, immunizations and specialized clinics including OB/GYN, HIV/AIDS, eye care and dental care.
Accommodations and Food
The Dimock Center has a wide variety of short- and long-term residences located on its campus, with 11 different housing areas for men, women and children. Typically, housing is set up in residential homes, with shared bedrooms and bathrooms. All homes include kitchens and areas where clients can relax and watch TV during downtime. The grounds provide plenty of space for walks and smoke breaks.
Depending on the program, clients either have simple meals prepared for them three times a day or are able to cook for themselves. Typically, they’re able to go out to the grocery store to buy ingredients or staff members bring the groceries into the houses on a weekly basis.
While the facilities do not offer extensive amenities, recreation rooms provide space for group fitness activities such as yoga and aerobics.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment can last anywhere from seven days to 12 months and includes a variety of clinical services. Each week, clients receive individual counseling with a Master’s level therapist. Group therapy takes up several hours a day, focusing on developing positive coping skills. Evidence-based therapy techniques such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) are used in both group and individual therapy and group topics include relapse prevention, life skills, codependency, abuse, trauma and processing. Throughout the week, clients are also given homework to speed up the learning process, as well as planning tools for their release.
Life skills are a crucial part of recovery here. Educational programming, recovery support, parenting skill building, vocational training and reintegration with families are available. Family members are welcome to take part in individual sessions where clients can work on rebuilding communication and improving family dynamics.
The program also focuses on healing through the arts, with music, art, yoga and other expressive therapies available throughout treatment.
With a staff made up of physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, case managers, recovery specialists and administrative staff, clients at The Dimock Center get plenty of care.
