Delta Medical Center is part of the Acadia Healthcare network. It offers full-service medical, surgical and psychiatric care in Memphis, Tennessee. Delta’s behavioral health treatment center is located in a major medical hospital and addresses a wide variety of clients, including those with co-occurring disorders. The adult substance abuse treatment program consists of detoxinpatient treatment, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).

Accommodations and Food

The inpatient program at Delta occupies 20 beds in a coed wing, with men and women housed on opposite ends of the hallway. There are eight beds designated for detox. Clients sleep two to a room and, while private rooms are not available, the staff takes great care to match roommates according to their general age and personality types.

The hospital cafeteria staff prepares all meals and clients are able to request dishes, modifications and specialty foods. All allergies can be accommodated and Delta also offers the services of a dietician or nutritional consultant for clients.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Delta begins with thorough medical and psychiatric examinations that determine which method of treatment is most suitable for each client. Dual diagnosis support is available for those with co-occurring disorders. The detox program lasts for seven to 10 days, with medical monitoring 24 hours a day to treat any withdrawal symptoms or complications. Clients also receive medical treatment to help address any health-related concerns before they join the inpatient program.

Long-term Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with methadone or Suboxone for opiate addiction is not offered at Delta. Medications may be used on a short-term basis, gradually tapering down as clients learn coping strategies.

The inpatient program typically lasts for 30 days and includes individual CBT several times a week and daily group therapyPsychoeducational groups help clients learn about themselves and the disease model of addiction. Clients in all programs are encouraged to attend AA/NA meetings and develop a recovery support group. On-site meetings are offered twice a week for those in detox and inpatient.

Clients often step down to the PHP program after inpatient, meeting five days a week for six hours. The therapeutic approach is the same as the inpatient program and clients are often assigned to the same therapy groups during the day. The IOP program is offered three evenings a week in three-hour group sessions. Those in the IOP program have to schedule their own individual therapy sessions outside the evening group hours.

Delta often has as many as 10 staff on-site supervising and monitoring 20 clients. There are checks every 15 minutes to ensure the safety of each participant and cameras also monitor the premises. Staff includes mental health counselors, registered nurses, social workers, medical doctors, psychiatrists and two activities coordinators.

Extras

Nutritional and wellness counseling is available as well as art therapy. The staff also coordinates recreational activities, like trivia games and bingo.

In Summary

Delta Medical Center can effectively ease the early days of recovery for substance abusers. The program consists of psychiatric evaluations, medical examinations and daily individual and group therapy. While their food is high quality, Delta does not offer the more upscale therapeutic approaches expected at this price point.
